Hey guys, just some info on how to make your Jinbei Discovery or Lencarta Safari head to hold heavy modifiers. Note that I tried this with a Jinbei folding softbox or profold softbox for lencarta as shown HERE. If you have normal softbox or octabox (with rods and stuffs), just buy the speedring that has a thread hole to mount a light stand to it.

I was trying to find a way how to attach the foldable modifier (umbrella style) to lightstand, instead of the head. As we all know, the discovery/safari head is not able to withstand heavy modifiers + abuse + moving around. It may be able to handle the modifier if it stays at one place. But if you are constantly moving around, I wouldn't trust it lol. So by mounting the modifier to the light stand, the head will be basically weightless and wouldn't be putting much stress on the mount.

Anyway, I found a way to attach the modifier to the light stand. I used the speedlite L bracket and light stand adapter like THIS ONE. I remove everything except the L bracket and light stand adapter. Or, you can just buy the L bracket from HERE and attach your own light stand adapter to it. I already have it at my disposal, so I just use it.

Then, I unscrew one screw on the softbox (see pictures), and attach the L bracket to it. Screwed it back using a longer screw because the original screw was too short. But the L bracket was not attach dead centre. You can drill a hold between the two screws (red arrow 2nd pic) if you want to. I'll probably do the same later.

A downside, you can tilt the modifier, but it'll press against the modifier, so from the inside, it looks like it's going to poke in, but don't worry *** it won't. The only problem would be the light spread, but i guess it won't be a big of a deal for me.:D But now i will be able to use large modifiers such as the octabox without having to worry about breaking the mounting on the head. Anyway, here are some pictures i took just now.

Wouldn't it be better to get 3 in a U shape so the weight is even across 2 screws rather all on one?

Ooooorrrrr.... just buy the new heavy duty head and use it as you normally would. :D

I'd find that a right faff on a shoot where I needed to work quick. :)

yes you are right, but this was just a quick fix i did after going through my strobist kit. I'll go and do some metal fabrication later when i'm free :bonk::bonk:

Yes it was my option initially, but temporarily, i'll use the poor man's fix until i save up money to get the heavy duty head.. lol :D

I'd personally use an assistant to support it though if I was you, much quicker and they can move it for you too! :D

I do have an assistant. But before this, I had him holding the boom stick (or monopod) with beauty dish attached. I will try this setup after my final exams.

Besides, i'm not going to use it with modifier that is too big. I'm probably going to attach 120cm octa to it. So I'm guessing the setup (modifier to lightstand) would be strong and stable enough to hold the weight of folding 120cm octa compare to modifier to head. I've asked in a German forum and some users have tried attaching 120cm octa to the head, indoor. But they wouldn't recommend it for outdoor. Even by lifting a small amount of weight from the head would've given me much more freedom to move around. However, i have yet to try the setup. I'll post an update sooner or later :D:p

The actual heads sold by Lencarta are identical to the Jinbei ones (they have not been modified) so I probably have at least as much practical experience of using them as anyone else...

We've only had the heavy duty heads for a short time, so until then I've used just about every type of light shaper there is, indoors and out, with the lightweight heads. The Lencarta website has always made it clear that the lightweight head isn't intended for use with large, heavy modifiers BUT needs must, and I've used them many times, in all sorts of conditions, without problems.
You can see the video, and the blog entry, here

At Focus on Imaging last year I had a 70cm beauty dish fitted to the lightweight head for 4 DAYS, I used it for my lighting demos. I've also used it outdoors on umpteen location shoots, including during heavy wind. Michael Sewell has done the same, there is a video that shows a 150cm octa softbox used outdoors, and a 70cm beauty dish is also shown in the same video.

The trick is to be sensible. Weigh the stand down properly, and tie the actual modifier down using guy ropes. These precautions are essential with ANY flash head used under difficult conditions.

A very large number of people have bought into the Safari Li-on system, it's clear from conversations that most of them use them with large and heavy modifiers in all conditions, and not one person has broken a flash head...

Now though, the heavy duty flash head is available (although it's in short supply because of very high demand) and this completely solves the perceived problem.
