Hey guys, just some info on how to make your Jinbei Discovery or Lencarta Safari head to hold heavy modifiers. Note that I tried this with a Jinbei folding softbox or profold softbox for lencarta as shown HERE. If you have normal softbox or octabox (with rods and stuffs), just buy the speedring that has a thread hole to mount a light stand to it.
I was trying to find a way how to attach the foldable modifier (umbrella style) to lightstand, instead of the head. As we all know, the discovery/safari head is not able to withstand heavy modifiers + abuse + moving around. It may be able to handle the modifier if it stays at one place. But if you are constantly moving around, I wouldn't trust it lol. So by mounting the modifier to the light stand, the head will be basically weightless and wouldn't be putting much stress on the mount.
Anyway, I found a way to attach the modifier to the light stand. I used the speedlite L bracket and light stand adapter like THIS ONE. I remove everything except the L bracket and light stand adapter. Or, you can just buy the L bracket from HERE and attach your own light stand adapter to it. I already have it at my disposal, so I just use it.
Then, I unscrew one screw on the softbox (see pictures), and attach the L bracket to it. Screwed it back using a longer screw because the original screw was too short. But the L bracket was not attach dead centre. You can drill a hold between the two screws (red arrow 2nd pic) if you want to. I'll probably do the same later.
A downside, you can tilt the modifier, but it'll press against the modifier, so from the inside, it looks like it's going to poke in, but don't worry *** it won't. The only problem would be the light spread, but i guess it won't be a big of a deal for me.
But now i will be able to use large modifiers such as the octabox without having to worry about breaking the mounting on the head. Anyway, here are some pictures i took just now.
