In our area there’s a chap who is going around taking pictures of local scenes and turning the resulting images into large jigsaw puzzles which he is selling on line. He seems to be doing pretty good business: I understand the sale of jigsaws has increased hugely over lockdown. It gives people something to do I guess .....

Anyhow. We live in a pleasant, rural middle England location. Think a nice market town surrounded by countryside, so the scenes are local old/historic houses, street scenes which include some of the more attractive local architecture, a nearby NT property and it’s park and gardens, local gardens, farmland type landscapes etc. Quite often they include people as they go about their business, and one scene was a street party with dozens of local residents of a particular street celebrating something or other.

The images themselves are well shot and good quality. But I’m just wondering whether he needs any kind of permission to use these images, either from the owners of the property involved or the people photographed in them. I know the NT aren’t keen on people selling images of some of their property.

Any thoughts.

(I should add, I don’t know the bloke and have no personal issue with him earning a living.)

If the images are being used for commercial gain, then the photographer needs to research whether they need a contractual release for that building/thing. Buckingham Palace, The Gherkin, and Nelson's Column I believe require this, and it wouldn't surprise me to find out some of the more famous NT properties need it. A determined Google search would be your friend.

If the image was taken whilst standing on private property, the photographer also needs to make sure commercial photography is allowed. If it's the NT, it's almost certainly not. (Wasn't when I last went to one many years ago)

If there are recognisable people in the images, they would also need to sign a model release if it's for commercial purposes.

Selling jigsaws sounds like commercial use to me.
