I have been lucky to get a contract to do product photography for a big jewellery store in London. They had been trying to get the products photographed by someone in-house, which didn't turn well and had bought couple of stuff that I now will be able to put to full use. One thing they had which I had a go at playing with it for a few minutes is this box
Looks pretty interesting at first glance. Has anyone around here used it? Would be nice to hear any views on it.

A couple of shots taken on the fly to test the box, white gold with diamonds. Oh and I had to be locked in a safe room in order to work on these products due to Insurance legal requirements :)

That just seems to be a glorified and overpriced light box with built in lamps...

Frankly those examples are terrible, they are I suppose typical of light box results - just about OK for small items sold on fleabay, where the only objective is to show what the item looks like - but totally the wrong approach for expensive jewellery that is supposed to look attractive.

Just a couple of flash heads, one of them fitted with a softbox, some bits of black card, some bits of shiny things that act as reflectors and an understanding of light will produce results that blow these away.

I know a jewellery shop that pays £1000 a day for their photographer. It's not easy by any means. They look brilliant, and beyond anything you'll ever get in a lightbox.

Get reading Light, Science and Magic.

Thanks for the comments above.
These are not the final examples but as mentioned above I wanted to test the light box and just stuck wax to make the ring stand. I was more interested in the lighting that these boxes provide and wanted to hear your comments.
When I first saw the box I thought it might have cost probably around £100 and was not happy with the lighting at all but decided to give it a try. And this is what I got.

When I googled and saw the box and the price I was shocked to say the least, and thought am I missing something here?

Seems like the consensus is really conventional soft box lighting and working out best way to get the results rather than depending on this overpriced box. I don't think I have the courage to tell them that they paid an astronomical amount of money for something so silly and not so good :)

Just found a site that use a simple light box
