Is it really that bad ?

Looking for a lens for basic football and other stuff, like scenery, wildlife ect

It's not that bad, for the price it's actually quite good. My friend has one and gets some very nice results out of it.

You don't need a tripod, sure it might make life easier but it's not a necessity. Stabilisation is useful but it's not crucial and it's certainly not unusable if you don't have it.

I was happily wandering around earlier with a 400mm set up (so 600mm crop), that is significantly more heavy than this lens and I had no problem at all with camera shake, even shooting beyond sunset.

Got one of these in a job lot of gear a little while back and was happy to get 40 quid for it.

Not very good and much better available for not much more cash

That's about all it's worth, one to avoid unless it's all you can afford.
I have to say that was also my impression. From photozone review:-
from a value perspective it is fairly amazing what it can give you.
So for less than 100 it may seems to be a bargain.

I picked this up when it was on offer a while back and took this with it on the weekend. Not the best but ok for those on a budget.

*Yes the horizon looks out but its actually the curve of the river between Cardiff and England making it look uneven.

it's not a bad lens, with the Sigma, they are pretty much the only budget options for full frame (55-250 can't be used on FF). for example I don't really do telephoto apart from airshows and very few outings, so I see no reason to go for a heavy L lens. Canon's 70-300 offering is over priced for essentially the same thing.

why buy a heavy lens that never goes outside the house? or save a few hundred and buy a lighter version that's good-enough for those occasional shots?

unfortunately I bought it at £120. ah well.

Here's a few shots with the Tamron lens.
