jessops afd300 and canon 550d

I have the above combo, and and ettl doesn't seem to be working. It keeps flashing at full power and white out the photo.
There are no manual options on the flash. Any ideas?
Also please note that this is not the afd360.

The 300afd is ttl only and not ettl so will always flash at full power. The 360afd is ettl so may be worth upgrading.
