Jelly bean on galaxy s2 yet?

I wasn't aware that Jelly Bean would ever arrive in the S2. Since updating to ICS the phone has been glitcy and crashed :-( far to often.

Thanks for the heads up I'll investigate this a bit more.

Had it for a while now and it's an improvement. Have you tried manually updating, as I think that's how I got it?

As far as I'm lead to believe the role out of JB 4.1.2 has started but if you are tied to a carrier you will have to wait for them to add their bloatware before you will get a download notice in the system updates section.

There is a the leaked official which you can install via the backdoor.

Alternatively do what I did and root the phone and put a custom JB 4.2.2 ROM along with a custom kernel.
No bloatware, no glitches, no lags but plenty of feature rich content.

How easy is it to root the phone and put the custom rom on, are there any chances of bricking the phone?

I will say it's easy but then I have been doing custom installs for every man and their dog that i know so it's familiar territory.
That said there is always clear and concise instructions so even a novice can do it without problems.
As with anything that will void warranties and overwrite the phone Os there is a chance that you can brick the handset. Usually it only happens due to user error (not following instructions) or a broken connection when setting it up.

If you want more info check out XDA developers where you will find a plethora of info regarding rooting the galaxy S2.
Feel free to ask any further questions you may have.

Three have only made ICS available for the S2. No sign of JB but as above many have rooted and installed.

Novice....that's me, I have Slimbean running on my S1 on GiffGaff, its a slim down version of JB 4.2.2.

I've tried a few custom roms, the Cyanogen ICS's are quite funky but Slimbean is better suited to an old phone like the mine.
Only problem I've had is that 4.2.2 is so new, a few apps I used to use on ICS have not been updated to run on it yet.
There are lots of online tutorials that show you how to root and install a custom rom, I just followed one of those.
I gotta say that I felt fairly confident upgrading the phone since its 3 years old and if I did cock it up I'd only lose the going rate for an old S1, which ain't much, not sure I'd feel the same about a year old S3.
Anyway, it runs sweet with no Samsung or O2 bloat..:)

I don't have an S2, but I do have a Note and do keep tabs on new ROM releases. Visit this website....

http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=GT-I9100

and search the page for "VOD" and you will see that the Vodafone UK ROM was prepared back in January. I couldn't tell you what might have happened to it since, but I assume it's available through official channels (OTA or Kies).

Be aware that some Note users have complained of a very rocky upgrade experience to JB and they are struggling to overcome the issues. My Note upgrade went well, but not through official routes, which did not. I had to wipe the device and flash the ROM myself using PC Odin. Performance seems on a par with ICS, but there aren't many new features that interest me. Whether the S2 updates are equally troublesome I do not know, but if your phone is working well, consider whether JB will bring any worthwhile features you really want. Otherwise, maybe, leave well alone.

I can't make any sense of the xda site! So a little stuck with that.

I have had a few black screen moments which clear when the battery is taken out and popped back again. I have had a few times when it has just frozen and again, I had to take the battery out to clear it. These aren't numerous, though annoying, I have had searched again and there are signs that vodafone have sent it out as there were people posting on there forum pointing keyboard and gps issues since updating. I have done another check on the phone update and there is nothing there. Kies keeps saying latest firmware downloaded, but when phone is attached it says I have the most up to date version. Unless I am missing something in the settings to allow the upgrade to be done. Perhaps it is telling me something

I have in the meantime found and downloaded go launcher, I really like it.

Don't think you are missing anything it will happen when it's ready.
As long as you have auto notification on then you will be pinged a message in the notification bar when a download is ready.
As for pulling the battery, you shouldn't have to do that on the S2 even if you get a freeze or a black screen. Just press and hold the power button for a good 10 secs or until you see the Samsung splash screen. Still annoying buy saves you a few extra seconds.

As for XDA, yeah it's a bit of a minefield.
If you want, I can send you a few pertinent links for your perusal re rooting and custom ROM's. Will save you trying to navigate the site.

Go launcher is good but I find it resource hungry. I switched from that to nova launcher which is good to, but both allow a greater degree of home screen customisation.

Thanks Stuart, if you could send me the links that would be great, will take a look through.

Here you go Michael, these links run in the order of ROOTING-CUSTOM ROM-KERNALS

CF ROOT
The link below explains how CF root works and how to apply it to your phone. For the Galaxy S2 it is all based around basebands (this will become apparent if you read the thread in the link).
CF root works with ODIN to flash the phone. Assuming you can guarantee no interruption when the phone is connected to the PC by USB then this method is virtually fool proof (its the way I did my phone)

LIST OF CUSTOM ROM's
This link is pretty self explanatory in that it lists all the custom ROM's you can use on your phone.
They range from ICS to JB in AOSP (Android Open Source Project), AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) or original Samsung flavours. The type you choose is up to you and how much you want i the way of simplicity or feature packs.
At present I am running the AOKP Vanilla Rootbox V4 (based on JB 4.2.2)

LIST OF KERNALS
This is where it can get a we bit trickier if your not sure. Changing the kernal after you have done a custom ROM install can assist with many things from improving battery performance, changing WIFI functionality to allowing you to overclock/underclock your phone.
It can take a few attempts to find a kernal that works perfectly although in all honesty the developer usually declares which is stable and useable.
My current kernal is Dorimanx v9.21, this allows me to overclock to 1.6Ghz and underclock down to 100Mhz (the benefit here is I can set my phone up to idle at 200Mhz when the screen is off or the phone is inactive (a good way of saving battery)

If your not entirely sure though you can just avoid kernals altogether.
