I keep getting a message that Java wants to update my computer and I keep rejecting it.
My laptop is about 4 years old and I don't remember it popping up in the early days. It could be that it has downloaded with something else at some stage.
I am running Windows 10 and use the computer for general email, web browsing, downloading photo learning videos and PS/LR (CC version).

1. Should I be accepting the upgrades
2. Do I need it or can I delete it off my computer?

Any advice would be appreciated.

It is Java as it has the little steaming coffee cup image with it.
The actual pop up says

Java automatic update Java(TM} SE
Runtime environment
Verified publisher Sun microsoft systems inc
File origin: Hard drive on this computer

It's benign so you can allow the updates. As you guessed, you've probably installed something that needed it and will stop working if you delete it.

Java and JavaScript are two different things ….. which is claiming to be out of date ?

Fun fact: the confusion is deliberate. Java used to be cool and sexy so when somebody was looking for a new scripting language (because clearly not enough of those) they called it Javascript so that time poor managers would think it was also cool and sexy.

Yes you (probably) need it. Yes. it's generally safe. The license changed recently but for most domestic users there's no change and it's still free. You can get the latest version here if you don't want to trust the installer.

Online version will be best for most people unless you have very slow internet. Best practice is to allow the installer to remove the old version (you don't want the old version hanging around for security reasons)
