If one only saved only £100 having now bought 4 from Japan is strill aving £400. But one usually saves a lot more per item

Just had final cost including import duty etc and still made a small saving against the same used and a large saving against new prices

If you only saved a small amount, was the effort/risk worth it over buying from the UK?

definately. I would rather trust definitions on a camera/lens from a japanese seller . It is down to Japanese culture more than anything else which I witnessed when in Japan. Everything has to be exact in Japan. Trains arrive and depart within second of timtable, same with meals in hotels. get down 5 minuites late and you wont get served you missed meal times. All to do with what is called "saving face" Everything in Japan has to be precise, not to be so is a disgrace in Japanese eyes
It is the same with the 4 lenses already purchased direct from Japan sellers, description actually spot on infact even under estimated the quality .

example new or used?

used of course but could you tell the difference? sold a "near mint" . only because no box with it or paperwork.

same with this lens on my pana G9

P1001470.jpg both from Japan direct as are the other two lenses I own from direct japanese imports.

This latest purchase also includes a lens worth £40 so I recon on the whole purchase I have saves about £100 + againct the equivilent UK use version from an authorised dealer
times that by the 5 lenses and at a bare minimum saving of £500 and more like £750+ which I have not worked out exactly, based on UK used prices.

Thanks for your reply. I thought that would be the case but I wanted clarification. They certainly look good

there are a couple of things to be aware of. First some of the photos of lenses are "stock"photos they all use. The trick is to notice what is in the photo and position. If different then that is the actual photo of the lens. Next there should be several pictures of the lens (see link) from different sides ie front glass-back glass n and side. check the front lens carefully for dust, (usually mention in description anyway) . go for anything "near mint" or above. check it comes with everything ie lens hood etc but not possibly with box or instruction manual.
"
scroll down to " Item description from the seller" section in this one I purchased. gives you a better idea of what I am on about in this link. you don't get this detail for a UK retailer

Arrived from Japan yesterday. talk about being like new, even the manual was still in its sealed plastic bag. why it wasn't sold in a higher Band becase the protective little cloth bag was missing . If sold new with one that is?
Fedex charged £64.30 for VAT and courier costs

Japan will mark down anything with even any part item missing quite harshly.

Whereas the West will label it Mint, like new, without a box, no manual, mark on the body, scratch on the LCD......but beside that, it's MINT!

Last year I bought a Nikon lens from Japan, a lens that was last manufactured in 1994.... It was literally "brand new in box"
