From Jigsaw24. A 20" IMAC 2gb along with a 2tb NATS and creative suite/lightroom.

I was all lined up to buy a raid-arrayed PC but took cold feet after looking at Vista. I can use my current Lacie monitor and can upgrade to 3gb if I feel this is not sufficient.

I'll let you know how I get on. It arrives Monday.

It'll be a bloody Nokon next

Congrats dude :) Some info. /waits for thread to go downhill faster than an F1 car on a ski slope ;)

Nothing wrong with a mac. Previously had a 17" imac G5 and was very much considering the 24" imac if only it was a tiny bit cheaper (I'm tight.) You are right Vista is rubbish but you could have always had XP.

The good thing thing (depending on your POV) is that assuming its a new intel imac and not the older G5 you can dual boot OSX and Windows so you can have double the headache. ;)

Not sure Vista being rubbish is the right words, it will undeniably be exactly like XP whereby Microsoft save shed loads of testing time and personnel by giving it in a format where it hangs together just and let the public find your faults, all big software people do like HP and IBM its cheaper and as they fix stuff and people become desensitised to its failings it will be hailed in time as being better than XP and worse than the next wotever, and so is the way of the world :shake:

Godd decision my man!!  Probably need the 3gig asap for photo. work. Did you get the top graphics card?

good stuff on the purchase...thinking I'll be following in not too distant future - and yes, Vista has put me off the whole pc scene completely!

useful link, cheers :D

I ran through my file sizes / workflow with them and they recommended the 2gb - will see how this suffices. Yes to the top card.

Could have gone for the 24 inch but then paypack time would be longer. Also I will have two monitors so this should be ok for now.

And there was me thinking there had been some REALLY heavy rainstorms in Scotland and it's only about a computer... tsk, these thread titles!

Let me know you get on with your Nikon! ;)

Vista has put me off the whole pc scene completely!

I am not against Vista as such. I can see the progression that MS are making but feel it is a corporate led one (imagine a lot of my work machines will be Vista very soon). I just think that in the creative field the hardware/software mix that Apple offer has began to make enough attraction to me to finally put some money down.

I remain open minded and will report my progress if that helps any other switherers.

Another factor in my decision is that we could always use an IMAC in our house (EDIT: AFTER I have finished with it ;))for the kids/wife to browse, etc so feel this machine could have a long and useful life. I have found that keeping old PCs "patched" takes up an inordinate amount of time.

It is that extra maintenance in general that is causing the gradual drift to Macs I am sure. I would still stay away from Aperture for a while, Lightroom is the one man army way to go. Best advice I was given at the time of my Mac deflowering was, 'don't think how do I do this - just do it'.
Oh yeah . Keep your mightymouse clean. Like sunscreen a boring but lifesaving bit of sense. G'Luck.

Congratulations. You won't regret it. I may be selling a 20" 'er soon - that 24" jobbie looks too good to leave in the shop

Good decision and welcome to the club. I switched just before crimbo to an imac 24....best move I have ever done. Run dual monitors and its great.
Was actually going for the 20" but once I saw the 24 next to it in the MAC shop...what can I say...am weak!!:D

cheers

OK I have unpacked the box, which is now a car for my daughter Lucy, and have downloaded the many, many, updates which were needed by OS X, Adobe, and other prop software. Have formatted the 2TB storage unit and transferred all files (24 hours solid copying!). Phew!

Now here's where I need advice. I bought a wireless Mighty Mouse but it has no "right-click". How do you access a context sensitive menu (or equivalent) on a Mac or am I just patently missing a point? :D

The mighty mouse Rt click should work out of the box. The odd thing to learn is that to make it work you need to have your Left click finger OFF the mouse. So it's lift left and click right and visa versa. Let me know if it don't work.

Yeah its clever you see. It knows if you push the right side you want right click, and push the left for left. If you have any trouble hold down ctrl for right click.

No probs. To access any set options. Go to 'system preferences'. Usually in your dock. Awhite box thing with a light switch and 'apple' logo. The keyboard/mouse etc..

Is that ctrl or COMMAND? :D

I have been reading up on lightroom to see how it will react to my date-based storage/filing method so will need every click available when I get to that bit!

Sorry Sharkey you nipped in after Pete there. Yes I have found the "control panel" and already changed a few behaviours - before it changed mine!

Again no probs.. I think all the Mac men/ladies will be only 'too' pleased to lend a hand. Really good to see you using a quality bit of kit for your work.

It is ctrl + left click that gives you a right click. But you should only need that if Rt click stops working (unlikely)

OK. Very easy and should have spotted it. Both sides of the mouse were set to "primary button" in System Preferences. Thanks for the help!

Mac newbie.:geek:

Jigsaw is just down the road from me, small world you getting it from them, how you getting on with it, we're due to get a suite of 3 Mac Pros from them in a couple of months time.

You won't regret it - had apple II then started with Mac back in the dark ages '80s and stayed with them - still Windows is trying to catch up. Wish you luck as I have never had one fail me yet that couldn't be quickly cured. One grey screen SE30 is still in use in the surgery churning our word processed routine letters - if it ain't broke - dont fix it.
