Pretty much as the title says, I was borrowing a film camera from my Dad, but have recently acquired my own film camera and wanted to take my film out that only at 4 frames exposed. I pressed the auto rewind and it did exactly that - rewound the film fully.

Is there anyway of me getting the film back of the canister and still be able to re use the film? I don't mind sacrificing the first 4 frames, as i can't remember what was on them anyway. I still think the best way to learn is by your mistakes.

Thanks

Kev

You can get special thin tweezer like gadgets that when put in the gap where the film comes out - it latches onto the film and you can pull it back out.

or if you have a changing bag - you can open the canister - pull out the tongue and then put it all back together again....

I don't know if modern canisters are as easy to assemble as the ones I used to load with black and white film years ago.

thanks for your help guys, do you know what the tweezers are called, and where i might be able to get them from? I don't think i'd trust my self with putting a canister back to gether in a changing bag, last time i was in a dark room i even struggled getting the canister apart.

Use another piece of film, insert it into the slot and forward turn the spool so the film runs upthe inserted film.

Try going into a proper camera shop and ask very nicely if they have a film retriever, it's a very thin piece of metal with little hooks on it that engage with the sprocket holes, they may even do for you!

It's called a 'Leader-Extractor'...

if you've got a section of film around (the first bit of last film you developed - one with no shots on is ideal) take that, apply some double sided tape to the first half inch or so of it, then thread it into the film canisters slot. Now, turn the film in the canister using the film spool that sticks out until it sticks on the piece of taped neg. you pushed in. When this happens, you can slowly pull out the taped neg, and it should bring out the film leader. Might take a couple of goes to fish it out, but it's cheaper than a film extractor or changing bag.

Thats pretty much the same as the Dymo technique #7, much cheaper than an extractor that you might never use again.

just watch out - a few cameras wind all the film out and shoot backwards - (some canons did)but most shoot along the film then rewind the whole film - so if you are going from one type to another.....

Thanks for the tips guy's I'm off to find some Dymo tape

I have a Jessops or Patterson one in the basement somewhere...One day I'll get around to digging it all out - I think there are some Patterson dev tanks and trays down there as well...

Spent 10min trying your idea and it didn't work.

I have only had to do it once and it worked a treat for me, I just inserted it in about half a cm and it just came out, lucky I guess then.

If you've a Calumet or Jacobs near you, try one of them. I got one from Calumet that's the same as the second Rob showed. I've seen them in some Jessops within the last year as well.
