I've been asked to do a photoshoot for a boy band to be used to promote their new album. It will probably be an outdoors photoshoot. Any suggestions please on technique and which would be the best lens to use. I will need some photos of individual members and also photos with the 4 of them together.
I have a Nikon D80 with the following lenses.
Sigma 18-50 2.8
Nikon 55-200
Nikon 50 1.8D
Nikon 24 2.8D
Sigma 105 Macro
Sigma 10-20.

As far as bands go, they normally will tell you what 'look' they want. It will be purley personal to them.

I have done a couple of local bands and both of them knew what image they wanted. It was just down to them to purvay to me what they wanted and we worked together to produce it in the camera.

Lesson one... Talk to the Band!

Determine what they want and then decide what equipment to use..

Listen to their music. Look at their website. Meet with them over a coffee.

Speak to their agent. Ask lots of questions. Draw up a storyboard.

Look at similar bands images.

Thank you both for your comments, but it's more about the best camera technique that I need to know. I know the band very well, as one of them is my grandson, and my husband is their agent. What lenses would be best to use for close up portraits? Do I need to use extra equipment such as umbrellas and reflectors? Would I need to use flash outside? I have a Speedlite flash. Sorry to ask so many questions but I just wonder how a Pro photographer would go about it?

I've never tried this kind of thing, so I'm really guessing here, but I would suggest:

1. You will definitely need reflectors and some kind of additional lighting, to prevent harsh shadows/give fill-in. (A remote flash might work but best ask someone in the lighting forum :))

2. Wide angle lenses (probably somewhere between 12mm and 35mm) for environmental-type whole band shots and narrower (somewhere between 50mm and 85mm) for more intimate, individual protraits. Faster lenses tend to be more use, so you can shoot in dull light....bright sunlight will give you terrible contrast issues.

3. You might want to consider a couple of filters in case sky -to-land contrast too great, and possibly a polariser??

Good luck with it!!

Thanks Carole. That's what I was thinking. They have a Pro photographer who does their main publicity photos, but the boys are always needing extra photos for their handouts, signed photos, etc. They're a very vain lot of lads so I suppose the main criteria is to make them look beautiful.:D
Next purchase then will be umbrella and reflectors.

I've shot a few bands and I think an important thing for group pictures is to quickly check every band member before you press the shutter on every pic. It's easy to overlook someone and end up with half a shadow across their face or some other simple mistake that you would have noticed if you were just shooting one person.

I shot a band where one of the members licked his lips every few seconds which meant I had to keep an eye on him pretty much the whole time and time it just right. That was a nightmare but the pics were well worth it in the end.

If you are doing head shots for promo handouts for each member use the 50mm lens. I use this as my main lens for pre school outdoor portraits and it is a cracking little lens. For the group shots I would use the 18-50. If you have a tripod with cable release it would help you out making it easier to check the group are all doing what you asked.

I've just done 2 asian rappers that have been around a good few years... Metz n Trix.

We did the shots outside at night with 2 light boxes and here are a few unedited shots that i need to edit still if you want ideas...
Don't know if it will help you or not.

Find out what the traits are of the band members then you can work that into the shot.
