On February 3, 1959, a plane crash killed 22-year-old Buddy Holly, 28-year-old J.P. Richardson AKA The Big Bopper, and 17-year-old Ritchie Valens. It's remembered as "the day the music died" because of Don McClean's song American Pie.

They died before I was born but their music has never been far away from me.

I've been a buddy holly fan for years, and as a result, my kids are too.
So young when he died.
Such great music, and I've often wondered how "big" he'd have become if he hadn't taken that fateful flight.

Yet Don Mclean has repeatedly said that's not what the song is about.

I was watching an interview years ago, and Don was asked "What actually does American pie mean?"
Without missing a beat he said
"That I'll never have to work again"
