right, need some lowlight experience - so get a used 50mm 1.8 for the D40 ?

no prob - did a bit of research - decided to look for a cheap Nikkor 50 1.8 AF [non D] or even an older AI series E ...right? ..wrong !!

just watched a 50 1.8 AF Mk1 [ introduced 1986] go for £95 +pp....:cuckoo:
and then a 28mm 2.8 go for £87 +pp...........:shrug:

ahem..cough ....think I'll be looking in Classifieds here !
 
ive seen film out of date go for more that going to jessops and buying new
sometimes people are fools
 
And you are fare better selling on here as well, total fees for anything sold on ebay up to £400 is 15%

The older Nikkor 50 1.8 AF [non D]is a much better lens than the current 50mm D...
I have both...but I hardly ever use the D version since picking up and older AF version...its better made and quieter..probably down to the much better Japanese build quality...
Dont be surprised if you have to pay over the odds for one as they are really hard to come by and in high demand..
Avoid the older AI series E 50mm as it wont meeter with the D40...shame there a fantastic lens and can be found at good prices on sites like ebay

:thumbs:well that explains it somewhat - selling your "D".then.....?...;)

read a fascinating series of reviews/history on the 50mm by "this" chap

was looking for a cheap AF or even an E-series - I plan to buy a D200 this summer, and it will meter and work with aperture and manual - yes?

Out of date film has a particular quality and attraction - hence a value. You either pay for it, or wait years for in-date film to become out of date.

A trip to Merchant City might be worthwhile, it's the kind of thing they often have sitting in the cabinet
 
You're absolutely right, eBay is getting ludicrous. I've completely given up on it.

Items sell for absolutely stupid prices. Sometimes even higher than you can buy them for new! (As other people have already indicated.)

For me to buy from a complete stranger (and take their word for it that the item is legit) I'm looking for a substantial saving over new.
 
You can still pick up bargains with a bit of luck, usually stuff that has been wrongly classified or badly titled.

Friend of mine bought a surround sound speaker and sub set....the seller had done a really bad job of writing the ad, only if you read right into the small text on the auction would you really see what was included. Short version is that he bought a complete KEF sub+surround package for about £500, then sold the subwoofer for £600 a couple of days later :)
 
there are still cheep items out there, but not as many as you could find a few years ago.

look at MPB Photographic (quite often there's an ad at the top of each page)

They're a pleasure to deal with. Am awaiting my Tokina 50-135 off them! ;)
 
On ebay it's better to watch for

House clearance Box Camera and 50 lensis £1 :lol:

IIRC, my pre-D 50 f/1.8 was £40. From a proper shop. 2nd hand with 6 months' warranty.

I do hope that Yardbent knows that the lens he was looking at will not AF on a D40 - he'll need one of the far more expensive f/1.4 AF-S or Sigma f/1.4 HSM 50mm lenses and they're less common on the 2nd hand market.

yes thanks for the heads up - :thumbs: - only wanted a 50mm to get some lowlight and some macro experience with ext tubes
planning upgrade to D200 this summer - believe the 50AF will meter ok but manual focus

Sorry no ..not at the moment..but I may let the E - series go...
I use a few old lenses om my d200 and the meter fine in aperture and manual mode only

thanks for the confirmation - I prefer landscape, but was intrigued by the possibility of doing some macro with a 50mm
 
You can use any length for macro and there are a lot of M42 screw mount lenses that you could use with a converter such as 28mm Vivitars.

Helios 50mm's (M42) can be picked up for £10-£15 as can Yashica's.

thanks - only *just* getting familiar with all the Nikon lens configurations - hesitant to start learning about M42..... :shake:
are u saying with the correct mount an M42 lens will fit Nikon F mount - not seen that before...?..........................John
