Yes I know I was going to take time out from the forum to get myself sorted out, but why is it that when you seem to be just getting sorted something else comes out and hits you just where it hurts.:'(

Trying to get myself sorted with camera, lap top etc so I can share my photos with my family etc, then the dog goes lame.

Took her to the vet yesterday needs an operation to sort out something (no Insurance, will not hear of it:thumbsdown:) and this is going to cost in excess of £2,500 :help:

So looks like the new lap top I have only just bought of here is back up for sale, will have to sell my bivvy hide also to raise a bit of cash and have even thought about the 7D which I don't want to do but may be a case of needs must, and all comes just before xmas:shake:

Yes I have work coming in and wil be very busy around the november /December time, but my dog comes first (either op to Put to sleep, and the second is NOT AN OPTION, I love them dearly.

Will not get into debt over this as always been taught to get straight so am trying my best to do this.

It may seem stupid to some of you that I have only just got the lap top but if this was a week before then I would not have bought it and put it on hold till I got straight again.

Perhaps I am not the only person that this happens to but seems like you are on your own and you are the only one targeted.

Oh forgot to mention car due MOT this week also :bang:

I have a very good other half who has agreed to help but I cannot let him pay all the bill as I am not that sort of person, there is give and take in this household and I am not one to do all the taking  want to show I am helping.

Am I being stupid

I am praying so hope my prayers are answered.

Forgot to say "A huge Thank you" to those of me who have sent me e mails, it is times like these you know you have REAL friends.

No I do not think you are being stupid - dogs give a lot in return and for everything else there is Mastercard!!!

Have you spoke to psda, as they can help sometimes, you do not always have to be on benifit. Years ago my first dalmation was very ill, I was on my own with five kids but not on benifits and they did the operation for me at a very reduced cost.

Nope, you're not stupid. Pets are a part of the family. I'd spend what I had to to ensure my dogs were ok.

Wishing your pooch a speedy recovery :)

Don't want to get into debt just adds fuel to the fire would rather try to raise the money in this case.

Lappy was a bit of a luxury to me and if this can go twoards the dog then that will give me more pleasure, after all she can't fend for herself.

I agree would not be without them.

How old is the dog Nicki?

Hope the dog gets well soon:)

May I ask why you are so set against the pet insurance? We have it for our dogs and cats and it is a boon really.

I'm not sure why you think your other half shouldn't pay for this Briony? I know we're all different in our approach to these things, but in this household there'd be no hesitation about this. If your other half has the money, is he really prepared to see you sacrrifice your laptop and camera gear knowing how much it means to you?

sorry to hear that :(

out of interest whats the deal with insurance, not sure from what you say but it sounds like you have it but they wont pay out?

Leg related, not insured

How old is the dog Nicki?

Only 6 and an active gundog

Not against it but every time I seem to claim I always hit a problem, had one dog with OCD not stated in the policy, when it came to claim would not pay out, that was one incident, which cost me over £1000.00

I just feel that it is both our dogs and we have full respobsibility for them and he has agreed to help but just me being stubborn, the lap top was only a luxury which can be replaced when I have saved up enough money to do so,
I have the 450 d so the 7D could also go and be replaced in due course. My dogs mean the world to me and have always said I will do anything it takes, and if this is what it takes then so be it

Will your vet let you pay over a period of time - mine does this for me when it is necessary, such as when I had three (uninsured) dogs all needing operations within a few weeks of each other a few years ago.

I am hoping so, but the problem is that this is a referral and they do not know me so a bit of trust is needed here

No huni, you're far from stupid and totally understand where you're coming from. I hope that your dog makes a speedy recovery - and I'm glad to see you back! x

Thank you.

There's something on watchdog this week about pet insurance not paying out when they should.

What breed of gun dog? Labs, setters and retrievers all have hip trouble. I'd also take him/her to another vet for a second opinion.

I'd get either the camera or the dog on 0% finance. The camera is an investment as you can earn money to pay for the dog!

My old Springer was a tremendous working gundog, He was nearly 15 when I had to have him put down, which is really good for a Spaniel, but it still cracked me up when I had to take him on that last trip to the vet. :(

I hope you get it sorted Briony.

I agree, and at the risk of sounding like a total **** all I see is the OP beating themselves senseless over something that can be sorted out rationally.

£2500 is an awful lot of money to spend on a simple gundog Nicki, unless it is a breeder..........

You know where I stand on this, I think, so i`m not gonna say it.........:)

To be fair Trench me and Jan only have 'our money' and we both pee in the same pot. We do have friends though who have separate accounts and take a different view of these things.

interesting, i thought the GF mums collie had her cruciate ligament done on insurance.. might be wrong or it might be insurer dependant though i guess.

:(

My insurers won't have anything on leg related problems because I have claimed before (one of the few times I needed to) so did not bother.

Just spoke to consultant and he can't fit her in till the end of November which gives me a bit mor lee way on the money side of things but she has to suffer :shake: until then although on pain relief

That is going to be

£100.00 consutlation
£170.00 xrays
£1000.00 exploratory op
£1,400 - £1,800 op (this will include the above £1000.00 for ex op

£150.00 follow up consultation. :gag:

Got to laugh or else you will cry.

Busy phoning round now to see if there is anyone else that can help me regarding the op. times

PDSA say :shake: because we are earning.

Earning with my 7D :shake: I am not that good :help:

Don't say it Frac - it might be a working dog, but it's obviously also a much loved family pet and it's only 6 years old. ;)

I`m not going to Cedders, it is obvious that Nicki cares for this dog ..........

FTR, I don`t know a keeper, beater, picking up man or farmer that does not weep like a baby when the time comes, myself included.

I know and it is just me, I am not beating myself up about this just being sensible and not selfish, If I can help by selling my luxuries then I will, life is not all about taking and I like to help in what way I can.

Not just a gundog but a family member, and I know where you are coming from and me of all people who was a qual. vet nurse, if the prognosis was not good then we would have to think again but at the end of it (I hope) I will still have one of my friends.

I have a very generous OH who will apy for all of it but me being me wants to chop in and help all I can so as I said above luxuries may have to go, not the end of the world is it  still have my desk top and my 450 (if push comes to shove and I DO have to sell the 7D)

WHAT'S THE SAYING "A DOG IS FOR LIFE NOT FOR XMAS"

So, so right, had a sleepless night last night (and I dare say a few more to come) worrying but I always say to myself there are people worse off than myslef out there, just have to find them ;)

Just have to pull the old purse strings in a bit, xmas will be very tight this year.

Could you say NO to this  I can't :'(

Looks a proper Lab. - not one of those rangey apologies you see so often.

I fully understand what you mean about that, soooo, why not let the OH pay up front, and pay back a little at a time, maybe some in kind [NO NOT that way Ade, before you say it] or whatever agreement you can come to? That way, your dog gets sorted, you get to keep the kit and feel you are contributing, your OH feels like he has done something good for you [and pressumably a family member he loves too]?

Also, I am guessing the previous claim was same dog, same leg, same or related condition?

That is going to have to be the answer I think, but will give up a couple of luxuries though just to show willing.

Yes she is proper Lab.

Go back to your insurers and complain like hell, mention Watchdog, etc. You've nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Tried it, will now cancel and look for a different one, of course I will have to mention this.

I think that they are all out the same mould and my consultant even said he was not suprised.

Will try my horse insurers next.

I cant believe those fees!! I know generally IMO thats vets are up their with best of them with crazy prices, but £100 for a consultation:eek:. Mine charges £35 (well it was the last time i had the misfortune to contribute to his latest four wheel drive!!)

That said you are right in what you say, dogs working or otherwise should be part of the family. I know that if i got up against it my Fern would get whatever it takes, i would certainly go without to make sure she did.

I would bin that vet out of hand!

Those fees are about right for a specialist [Nicky makes the point its not her regular vet but a referral to a specialist], comparable to others in the same field and in fairness comparable to a private doctor too. Last time I used one, my cat picked up a post op infection and the wound needed to be reopened by a specialist and dealt with - 1200 eye watering quid later  Insurance covered it even though it was questionable that the original vet could have been blamed if the insurance had wanted to play hard ball....

The problem with a lot of pet insurance, unless you opt for the top level, is many wont cover recurring conditions or similar claims. we have a 'normal' level of cover atm, but our vet has recommended that we upgrade at the next renewal to the higher level as it really does cover almost all eventualities, but is of course, considerably more expensive, and even then, there will be small print. In fairness though, we have had several claims over the last few years and they have been very good and very quick, so can't complain and will indeed upgrade the policies.

£1200 for a cat.................

Sorry YV, but wow............

My original consultation was only £19.50 which was not that bad and yes this was a referral, one place I rang wanted £134.00 consultation :shake:
having said that that my follow up appointment is going to be £150.00 :gag:if I go with this vet, but the only problem there is he can't do the op till the end of November:shake:

yes Brian, I am going without that is why the laptop, bivvy etc is up for sale.

Luxuries I can do wqithout at the present time, will have to put the shed where the bivvy is at the mo and forget the one up the field.

Aye, spay that went wrong on a pedigree Tonkinese... she was never a lucky cat - 5 years later, she got clipped by a car and had to have her tail amputated, a year after that a bloody big fox got her one night. She wouldn't come in at bedtime and we were woken by the dogs going ballistic at noises outside. I ran out, in my pj's but was too late :( She was great as cat, ignored birds, and walked round the block with us when we walked the dogs, but just unlucky :|

I missed the point it was a specialist consultation!! Nah put the shed in the house field, you can always use mine in bottom field, have to put up with smell, bacon rolls and Ferny doesnt help:D:D:D

Put your dog first, Nicki.
I have always done that with my dogs (all labs). Never regetted the expense.

Start a donation page??? I think the pooch is definitely cute enough. If 2500 people all coughed up a quid then you'd be sorted :)
