Hi

I am wondering why i should buy a battery grip for my 400D as i see alot of you have them in your kit lists ( thats battery grips in general)

so what are the advantages of having one over just putting in the battery when it runs out.

many thanks

M

on a battery grip the shutter release button, and the other 3 buttons that are normally found on the top right of the camera are replicated. Therefore when you hold the camera in portrait mode all the buttons can still be accessed with your right hand without having to practice limp wristed techniques.

so f you don't do portaits there isn't much point

I had one for my 400D because its a small body, but am quite happy without one on my 20D.
It makes a heck of a difference to the feel of the camera, and it never came off my 400D.

I use mine all the time, in my opinion it makes the camera more comfortable to hold, maybe worth popping down your local store and asking them to try a 400d with one on.

1) extra shooting. double the batterys = double the time shooting
1a) if pushed you can use 6x AA batteries

2) better balance - if you have a long heavy lens, it helps.

3) physical comfort - I've got fairly big hands, and I find it easier to hold. Those with small hands may not have this problem

4) portrait mounted thumbwheel and shutter button is ideal for those who shoot regularly with a vertical composition, not just for those who take portraits.

thanks guys, how much should you pay for a second hand one? roughly

and also i am thinking of getting a canon f1.8 50mm, is it worth it as it is only cheap 2nd hand.

I have one on my 5D and 30D and had one on my 400D before that. For me, once I held a camera with a grip on I was converted and no SLR feels right without one now. Also you get all the advantages mentioned above. I would say they are especially useful on a 400D as they make the body feel more solid and better balanced, it gives you more to get hold of, if you know what I mean.

I have a grip from my old 400D that I have never got round to selling. It's in immaculate condition with original box. You can have it for £60 including delivery.

PM me if you're interested ;)

Guess you either like grips or you don't. I got one with the 5D and never use it. To me it just makes the camera bulky and clumsy. Not decided for certain yet but I will probably sell it.

I remember the Alas Smith and Jones Sketch about the HIFI component that added two inches to your system without effecting the sound art all!

I do like the feel of my camera much more with the grip but it also makes the cameras look cool...
:)

I remeber thinking "whats the point" but then Pete and Marcel bullied me into buying one and it hasnt been off my 350D since! It is amazing how usefull the extra shutter button is, and the fact you dont have to keep track of your battery. Two charged batteries in and you are set for days! Using the little caddy thing for 6 AA batteries is usefull too if you do drain the two in the grip.

If you can find one to play with then have a go, its amazing the difference it makes :D

jimmy is the 50mm lens you have a F1.8. can i ask how mcuh did you pay for it and is it worth it

I got mine (50mm f/1.8) from Kerso for about £56 delivered. and yes they are worth it, sharp and fast.

I will check how much I paid, I cant remeber off the top of my head. To be honest I rarely use mine :( I love the small depth of field, but dont often shoot anything that requires/calls out for a small DOF - it is a nice lens (though it feels like a toy) and I need to play with mine more.

P.S - I think I paid about £70 from Warehouse Express - http://www.warehouseexpress.com/?/photo/lenses/canonlens.html#prime

does kerso sell baterys and grips, although i will try it first

I have one on my 400D, it's great.

Double batteries and it's soooo much more comfortable when holding the camera portrait style, especially since the 400D's body is smaller than that of it's older brothers.

I got a 3rd party one (not a Canon grip) for £30 on eBay, it's basically the same except it dosen't have the smaller buttons (used for selecting AF point and exposre). Has the shutter button and wheel tho.

Didn't really want to spend upto £100 on a grip, this one does just fine.

Looks more professional too :D

I have the grip on my 400D, even though I think I have small hands, it makes holding a lot more comfier. It is also good for balancing out heavy / long lenses, great shooting time with a second battery and you dont look like a complete spas while trying to shoot in portrait orientation!!!

I had a battery grip come with my 30d that I bought from Pete (Diego Garcia).

I never used it till someone asked about them on here, so I put it on to try for a few days before deciding whether to sell it or not.

It hasnt been off the camera since!

The part I like is that I find I can just touch the corner of it on my left shoulder (well, not shoulder but just below!) and it makes for a much more stable shot. I still think they look a bit odd, and if you put the camera down it almost always tips forward... but that aside I'd give it a thumbs up.

It helps your 400D look like a 1D series...

Thats a bit extreme. It helps your 400D look less of a girls camera ;) I took mine off my 30D the other week and had to put it on. The camera just didn't feel right. Using the 24-70 made the camera unbalanced.
