Well, I'm just getting back to work now, 12 weeks off sick so I figure it's time to do a little more :)

Just settling in and the MD comes up with a little problem for me. Now as there are so many clever IT types around here I figure this would be the best place to try for an answer

He, my MD, and another director are always chatting and laying plans, but they want a central area to record and update them. By this I mean a private blog or web site that would hold a diary that they can both access, read and update. The other thing is that they are both thick! computer wise that is, so it would have to be both idiot and bomb proof :gag:

Any one able to steer me in the right direction for this please as I have yet to have any dealings with blogs or the like ;)

Within the company it's best advised to have an intranet which is security/firewall wise the best option. I guess you have to read on the intranet stuff in order to swt it up. Google it and see what you may end up with.

If you use lotus notes at work instead of Outlook then notes has a database feature where all the relevant documents can be stored and accessed

I would be tempted to look at Sharepoint services, comes free with Windows Server 2003 and is easy to do all they want and more

I was going to suggest something Microsofty. Sharepoint will do it, but it could be as simple as a Public Folder with the appropriate permissions set and just use it for Notes.

Thanks for the replies chaps, but I think a little clarification is in order here.

The network (as such) that I have at work is only a few PC's running XP on a peer to peer basis, no server or anything fancy. Both the MD and the other director use laptops and are traveling all over the country. So the idea is that they can connect to a common resource (web based) to leave and update notes.

One thought Ive had is to use a web based email account that includes some editing software for notes and the like. Any other thoughts would be most welcome.

You can add a folder to 'my network places' on both their laptops. Make that folder a ftp to a subfolder on the companies web space or similar and they both have access to the same files from anywhere.

As far as they are concerned it will just be another folder in windows explorer.

Sharepoint would be the best way to go and you don't need an inhouse server to run it. When I last used it, there were very few UK based firms providing sharepoint servers.

But this may be of more interest to you. I've no idea when it will be going live but it does look as though it could do the job for you -

Whay Hay 2blue4u, many thanks for the heads up on that one. It looks to be just what they need. Lets hope its not too long before its up and running

why not rent a bit of space and setup a bb board, password protected of course, but then they can post notes and upload attachements etc?
