Issues using external display HP Spectre

I have a Spectre x360 15 inch with hdmi and 2x USB C (1 has thunderbolt). I can connect 1 monitor by hdmi and have been connecting the other via a usbC hub to hdmi. This has now stopped working and I have tried 2 other docks.

I have restored to factory settings but still not working and updated all drivers.

Any suggestions?

Ports fail after a while - they just wear with regular plugging & unplugging. After 4 1/2 years the mini displayport on my Dell XPS just wore out, but fortunately I also have HDMI. On my Macbook the USB ports wore out within a couple of years, one becoming almost unusable & the other a little flakey. This seems the most likely reason to me - is the machine a couple of years old?.
