Hi

Bought a used Tamron 28-75 and was not happy with the sharpness compared to my Tamron 17-50 and Nikon 24-105. Sent it to get check and fixed, lens has come back and looks like new and has been fixed and calibrated, however when I take pictures at F2.8 (i know it is not at its best as f2.8) it still look like it is back focusing. I focus on the eye and take a picture however the ear looks sharp but not the eye. It therefore seem like it might be an issue with either the camera or me.

What should be the next step in testing the lens please.
1. F2.8 (Raw converted to jpeg no sharpening)

Thank you

Hi Kev, sorry to hear you're having issues. It looks like it needs micro adjusting to me if your body does that? If not then I'm not sure what to suggest. Perhaps it's time to upgrade the body aswell.

You can download a calibration scale - or take a picture of a ruler. Make sure the camera is stable (on a tripod). Use live view and zoom in to make sure focus is where you think.

Hi David,

Hope you are well? Thank you for replying.

The d90 does not have micro adjustment, so it has to be another body. Still saving up for a d750....

Is it worth trying with another body?

Thanks

Yup. The step up to a D7100/7200 will be a big jump in resolution, sharpness, features etc. They both have the AA filter removed too and both offer focus MA. Both offer double memory card slots and also have the full CLS mode. Obviously the D750 would be a better move but if you don't have the cash then it's not even worth mentioning. Another option to consider would be the 600/610 for that FF boost.

Thanks, that is why I did before I sent it off to get it checked and fixed. The fix has not sorted it so looks like it must be the body.

David,

Just have my heart set on the D750, will just hold on to the lens and not use it till I can get the D750. I have other lenses that work well with the d90 for now.

Thanks

I wouldn't say "it's the body." It's more likely "the combination." There are "tolerances" for both the lens and the body and it just looks like they error in opposite directions, making the combined result unacceptable.
Thanks, the lens have been test and calibrated but I presume that would depend on the body it was tested and calibrated one.
