ISO Sensitivity Settings - D3300 (or any Nikon DX?)

I've tried setting the ISO sensitivity on my D3300 with a max ISO of 6400 and a minimum shutter speed of 1/125. I normally use AV mode. For some reason it isn't working - the ISO stays at 6400 permanently and the shutter speed changes. I'm probably doing something wrong but I can't figire it out. I should say that it seemed to work with a zoom lens which I have now sold but not with a 50mm prime which I'm trying now.

Any advice very gratefully received.

Thanks,
AL

Think I've found the answer - apparently if the camera cannot give a correct exposure at the figures set it will override them and this sometimes results in slower shutter speeds being set - which is obviously a good thing!
