ISO query on the 5D

Am i right in thing that everyone prefers to use a lower ISO to reduce noise? If so whay did canon make ISO 50 only available when you enable it in the custom function?

Any ideas? Also i read somewhere saying that ISO 3200 is really a software enhacement of ISO 1600 so is this the same for ISO 50?

The 1 Series Canon's have 50 ISO too - also enabled as an option. In all honesty there's no improvement that I can see from 100 ISO anyway, so you might as well keep the extra stop in speed.
