Hey all,
So i'm going up to Scotland the end of june/start of july and we had a though about staying in Skye for a couple of days. Does anyone have and recommendation for places to stay/B&B's/Hotels?
Would really appreciate it, thanks!

my work friend is up that way now i will ask him when he returns next week

Yes I do!

A great little B&B situated just outside Broadford on the Elgol Road. Lovely couple, homely, eggs from hen-house, proper tea & coffee, all that stuff. You are also well placed for touring the whole Island.

Now that's a plan :)!

I don't know much about that part of the UK ... excuse my ignorance, but would there still be snow up there in July?

Most of the snow has already gone from the West Coast. It will fall as snow in showers up until June (Hence the old saying "Dinna cast yer cloot, till May is oot!") but will not stay. Consolidated snow will remain in gullys and Northern slopes on the hills until past mid-summer's day but is unlikely to impede any walker. The Cuiliins with their dark rock will clear earlier as they heat up quicker.

I've stayed at The Three Chimneys in Dunvegan on Skye and can highly recommend it  It's a stunning location with wonderful views but cheap it isn't!

Mr. Orb,

Thank you for starting this thread ... seems like a wonderful place to visit and stay. I may just take on this and go up there sometime in July!

HIMUPNORTH,

Thank you for posting the link to the little "resort" ... I've had a look at their site and it does seem like a nice place to unwind for a few days. I am looking in to AA maps to see the best rout to take to get up there and what best scenic locations to pass-by!

As I may get up there frmo South Wales, I am thinking of doing a day's stop in the Lake District and then head into Scotland and then into Skye ... but I don't know what best rout to take .. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Grendel,

Now that is doing it in style, but as you've said it is not cheap ... at almost £400 a night I'd say it is the way to spend a weekend get-away. Thanks for posting the link.

Up to Glasgow (via North Wales & Lake district :D) then follow Loch Lomond, through Glencoe to Fort William. You can take the mallaig to Armadale ferry but I think you are better going North to Invermoristion, through Clunie to Kyle.

Yes - Himupnorth is right about the Kyle route - a much safer bet as the Mallaig-Armadale ferry can sometimes be a little temperemental! You also get the benefit of going past the lovely Eilean Donan Castle just before you reach Kyle. A must-visit in Kyle of Lochalsh itself is the public toilets. Honestly - I'm serious, it has to be seen to be believed (in a good way!)

For accomodation we could recommend Braeside B&B not too badly priced and bang in the middle of Portree so handy for pubs and restaurants etc for the evening, without having to drive afterwards. :)

this thread is bringing back some happy memories i really need to get up to scotland again :) never been to skye, but Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Fort Willaim route is superb :) and Eilean Donan is amazing :)

Thank you all, this is so helpful ... the A - Z map is out on the table now and I'm looking at the rout suggested and what gear I will be bringing along.

A call tomorrow will see what dates I can book the hotel for a couple of days ... sure hope to get to see some snow, as it's been a very long time since I last saw heavy snow piles.

 , I guess I will have to settle for that! :)

Thanks for the suggestions i really appreciate it :).

Just book a few nights there thanks :)
Are there any must do's? I can't wait to see the Cuillin Mountains (makes i nice change from flat old wiltshire). Just need to get some midge spray

Not in July I am afraid :(. You will see midges though!

I was just about to say the same thing.

I last went to Skye when I was 16 which is now in the dim and distant. We were supposed to camp there for 2 weeks and managed to stick it out for 7 days but then had to get out.

The midges on Skye are unlike anything I had ever seen before or seen since.

They will attack you to the point of sending you crazy.

We abandoned one walk and ran back to the car, ended up having to spray the midge killer inside the car, the windows were black with the little blighters.

was in skye last year and stayed in a cottage near staffin in the north of the island.

Midges only got really bad one night, was down in Elgol I think.

Gary, I just got back from Skye. Had a fantastic time, thanks very much for the recommendation. The accommodation was great, Alan and Barbara were very welcoming.

Shame it mostly rained the whole time I was up, but I think I managed to get some good shots.
Didn't get hit by the midges, was way too windy.

I'll be there for a week in September, I will let the midges know how much you missed them.:)
