can anyone advise me on what lens to use for the tt ?

i have a 150-500mm sigma but was thinking about buying the Sigma DC OS IF AF 18-250mm HSM AF stabalized model. or Canon EF 200mm f2.8 L USM MKII Lens

what lens would you buy with a budget of 400 pounds ?

thank you

With your budget personally I would probably go with something like the EF 70-200mm f4. I would imagine you get pretty close to the action, you shouldn't need IS for bikes and the lens is one of Canons best for what it costs.

Your 150-500mm should be pretty handy though I would have thought.

I'd add the 200 f/2.8 and bring the 150-500. The f/2.8 will keep you shooting if/when the light goes to crap. The 150-500 for reach and versatility if the light is good.

I don't shoot Canon....

From videos I've seen I wouldn't have thought you need longer than 200mm tbh, spectators look pretty close to the action. I would have said 70-200 f4 would be pretty good

agree with what you said about getting close that's why i think the 150-500mm is a bit big .

thanks for the reply's

Don't think of just panning shots as they go by. There's coming/going, wheelies, high sides, closeups of faces concentrating in a turn, etc. I wouldn't leave it behind unless there is weight/space restrictions to consider.

What parts of the course are you mostly expecting to be at?

Every one tries to do bike close ups. Their close and Bloody fast! Be a bit different. Do some wide angle stuff with the crowds. Show the setting not just the machinery.

Would it be worthwhile to hire one just for this and see how whatever you get works?

TBH, for a 1 lens solution, I would be tempted to go for a 2nd hand 18-250 or similar. The Sigma 150-500 can turn in some impressive results but it's a big heavy lump to carry around all day! Ultimate image quality from a superzoom may be compromised but should be acceptable up to A4. As always, try the actual lens you plan to buy before forking out for it (or buy from a dealer who allows a trial period) - if you're not happy with the lens, either don't but it or return it.

you do need a kit type lens for bike road racing as you can easily get close :-), I mean that 18 to 55 area should be covered

Geoff I went last year. Not sure if space is a problem, are you going by bike?
But IMHO (no nowt about Canon) I would taje the 150-500, ideally I would have something like a 70-200 and either a 50mm prime or a wider zoom.
You will need the length in places, to give an example all the below where taken with a 400mm

while they are a lot of places where the wider stuff will come in handy.

Its a great event, would love to be going back this year. But hopefully will be able to do the full 2 weeks next year.
