I've lived on Skye for 5 years but never done a photography trip to Lewis.
That's about to change in a couple of weeks as I'm going over for a long weekend.
Anyone who knows the area, can you give me any locations for sunrise/sunset please? We'll be based on the west coast but travelling isnt an issue.

I've not been over for a good few years (my brother was a gamekeeper there) but some suggestions would be:

Luskentyre Beach. It's probably the best know of the big white sandy beaches and you can get Westerly shots with the Harris Mountains in or Taransay.

The road out to Huisinis is good. Plenty on the way (you will pass through Amhuinnsuide Castle) and again should provide sunsets.

You may have seen it but there was a program on a couple of nights ago that might wet your whistle.

Cameron McNeish - The Hebridean Trail

Here's the link to it on iplayer...

It depends really, the whole island is full of great things to photograph, from black houses to amazing beaches you will not be shy on great things to capture, beaches like eoropie up in ness, then all the way to the south of the island down to rodel you can't help but see the amazing beaches. The place is very easy to get about but some very twisty roads and single lanes. Also a bit of a shame at the moment as the castle is currently undergoing a makeover so is covered in scaffold for the time being. Where are you planning on staying when you're up?

Also bring protection from the midges, they are rife up there just now :(

Edit: just noticed you're on the west side. Be sure to visit dal mor and dalbeg beaches, they are just past bragar a few miles and will be great for sunsets.

Ah yes :)

I've only been out to Harris / Lewis just the once.
It WAY up the list of places I need to re-visit.
It was a bit stormy while I was there, ferries weren't running almost the whole fortnight; made for some spectacular conditions though - and no midges :D

Luskentryre - monumentally huge wave with an offshore gale

Stones of Callanish - so windy I could barely stand up

I loved Hushinish - for the scenic drive and for exploring the peninsula.
The East side of Harris is a moonscape of polished granite with houses tucked into the hollows - stunning!
Stornaway fishing boats, very pleased with that shot - one of the best harbour shots I've ever taken.
Scalpay lighthouse - a bit of a hike but worth it. One of the spookiest places I've ever visited with toothbrushes still left in the keepers cottage and vintage pinball machines in the shed.

I'm on Harris just now, stunning scenery.

Just hope my mediocre landscape skills do it justice.

Get yourself up the clisham and enjoy the views :)

You normally have to book well in advance, but I would recommend a trip to St Kilda. There is a boat goes from Uig on Lewis but we went from Leverburgh on Harris last year.

It is an unforgettable place - Hirta, Boreray and the stacs. It is a World Heritage Site for both its natural and cultural significance and it has the largest colony of Northern Gannets in the world.

It is probably one of the most amazing places I have visited in the UK - certainly the most remote.

If you cannot get booked this time, make a point of booking for next year.
