Scotland Isle of Harris & Glen Affric

Im off to Scotland with the wife in a couple of weeks and will be spending a few days at Flodabay on Harris and Cannich in Glen Affric while its not a landscape photography trip as such I'm planning to do some shooting so any tips and pointers on these 2 areas would be appreciated

You're in a great spot on Harris for landscapes. The whole south coast loop from Tarbert takes in some stunning scenery. The beaches of Horgabost, Seilebost and Luskentyre should not be missed. They can work well in harsher light too, as it brings the colour of the sand and water out well.
There are some great coastal opportunities on the South East of the island, countless little lochans which would offer some great compositions when the light is good. I made a trip up to Callanish too, which was worthwhile. There looks to be some great seascapes to be had on the northwest of the island too, a couple of lighthouses, and a more rugged coastline. I didn't get chance to explore up that way, but I'm sure you would be well rewarded.

To add to Matty excellent suggestions - you must, must, must see those beaches (it is years ago now but I still remember camping on the dunes at Horgabost) - have a look at the OS maps of Harris, either online or paper and, if you don't have it, download The Photographers Ephemeris - http://photoephemeris.com/. It will tell you the times and direction of the sunrise and sunset and help to set up some interesting landscape shots. As the sun rises in the north east (and early) at this time of year, sunsets might be an easier option.

Also have a look at the excellent Walk Highlands site. It has details of walks all over Scotland. The ones for Harris are here - http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/outer-hebrides/harris.shtml. The walks for all of the areas range from easy strolls to full days in the hills.

Hope you get the sort of the weather the north west is enjoying now.

Thanks Dave I got the electronic versions of the os maps which I 've been looking at and TPE is in the bookmarks. Normally I prefer the sunrise but it will be more sunsets probaly a bit unfair on the wife if I spend half the day asleep after getting up early

I'd agree with the earlier comments about the beaches on the west coast of Harris. they're just magical. I've camped at Horgabost and I can honestly say I've never stayed overnight in a more beautiful spot.

The coast between Scarista and Leverburgh has very strange saltmarshes which are very appealing too.

The road to Flodabay will be interesting for you. I'll leave you to discover that little adventure for yourself!!
