Is upgrading to Canon 5D MkI dumb?

Hey guys,

I have a beloved Canon 30D, but it's time to upgrade. Obviously I would ideally love a Canon 5DMkII, as I really feel I might as well go full frame so I am buying lenses that will last me forever.

I have found the 8MP of the 30D not enough for printing (not that I do it often), and I love the bokeh you can get on wide angle lenses in low light with the 5DMkII.

However, I am not sure I can afford it right now AND I'm not sure my skills justify the price (yet). Would buying a 5DMkI and some good lenses be a better investment? Or is that a really stupid idea and I should just bite the bullet? I'm not sure if the Digic II processor in the MkI is that much of a jump from the 30D but on the other hand I'd have the full frame, 4mp more and hopefully better lenses....

Thank you for any advice!

My brother ditched his 40Ds for a 5D and is very happy. I went from a 5D to a mkII and am also very happy but I think he saw more of an improvement. Lenses matter more (usually) so pair a 5D with a nice portrait lens (50/1.4 is my fave) and you have a fine piece of kit.

How big are you printing? I used to use a 350D and once I'd run an extrapolation programme I could get A3 with ease.

I used the 5D for my final project at uni, and must say it is superb. The quality is outstannding, and if I had the money I wouldn't hesitate in getting one.

Go for it. 5D1's still get good money and if your buying second hand you get most of your expenditure back if you sold it on.

The difference you'll see going from Crop on the 40D to FF on the 5d1 would be well worth it.

As long as all your present lenses will work then it's well worth the upgrade.

I was lucky and had the money to go from 40D to 5D2 it sure was an eye opener.

Used the 5D for approx 3 years and shot and sold between 10 and 30 canvasses weekly from her. Canvasses were either 20x16 inch or 32x16 inch. Its a great camera

The 5D MKI is a great camera and a good step up from a 30D - but 30D's are superb and you should be able to great prints from them - how big were you printing?

Thanks guys. The printing is not usually a problem, it's just I was printing some portraits and was disappointed that the biggest I could reliably get at 200dpi was A3, I really wanted to go a bit bigger.

But in any case, I would really love to go full frame, so if the 5DMkI is still an ok choice even with the MkII out there, I might try and get a second hand one plus a 50mm 1.4 ... unless I suddenly win the lottery :)

Great choice - the 5D Classic is an absolutely excellent camera! Pairs beautifully with the 50mm f/1.4.

I went from a 450d to a 5d (still got the 450d). At first I didn't notice much difference, other than that lovely full-frameness, but after a few weeks using it I struggle to pick up the 450d. They have subtley different ways of rendering colour and I like each in it's own way, but the 5d is definitely a mighty fine camera. Just wish it had auto ISO and 6400. I agree with the 50mm f/1.4 being an excellent companion as well. The photos I've posted in here were taken with one and a 70-200mm f/4L.

If you can afford a 24-70 2-8 or a 28-105 your be blown away with the results.

MBP have a fair few used 5D mk1s in for less than £700, plus they do trade-ins. Great to deal with
