I know nothing about Sony cameras but it could have more to do with the focal length (you say 75-300 lens - I'm assuming it was taken at 300mm?), the lens quality (some cheaper zoom lens are soft at the long end), whether you were using a tripod, whether you used a remote or cable release, how you focussed, did you take in raw or jpg - if jpg any camera presets active, how much you cropped (I need my other computer on to look at my own Moon shots I took with my 300mm lens so I'm just guessing yours is a big crop) etc, etc......... It's a bit underexposed btw but you really don't need f11 for the Moon.

I've read that atmospheric conditions will also have an effect. Something to do with hot/moving air distorting an image.

Cheers Orangecroc it was off changed my post.

I wouldn't try to meter the exposure at all - just experiment to find the one that works. Dominic is right about atmospheric conditions too. Fire off lots of shots, go through them in your processing sw and find the sharpest.

When I used to mess around with my 70-300VR, I usually shot Moon handheld at f/7.1-8, spot metering, 1/160 or faster, ISO 100-200. Lens was on the D5100 body. No idea how your Sony performs, but I'd experiment a little with it. Good luck ;)

Thanks Tom and thank you too all that hit the like button, bring on the full moon.

Hi Chris Like the shot:clap::clap::clap:...... so what lens did you use on the Nikon?

... bring on the full moon.
Each to their own, but you may find the full moon a little lack lustre, I always find it very flat with little in the way of detail and depth due to the angle of the light when in the full phase. 1/2 and 3/4 quarter moon phases I feel provide the most interest, there you can see the shadows on the terminator and the crater walls.

EDIT: If you have nice landscape for the foreground, on a nearly new moon you can on occasion get some stunning Earthshine exposures.

It wasn't the best you could get, as it wasn't in focus!
