Is this the best "beginner kit" going?

Yes
Is there a better deal than this at the moment? I appreciate that the D80 is anything but "beginner", but at this price I'm finding it hard to justify anything else.

Nikon D80 + Nikon 18-55 VR = £391.48

Not for myself, but for a family member. My thinking is that long term it will probably be a cheaper option than a D40/D60, as obviously you have the AF motor built in. They don't have to have a Nikon, but even in the Canon range I'm assuming I would struggle to find this good a deal for this sort of price?

Nearly £50 off the previous price, been eyeing up that offer for a while myself Chris

cant go wrong for that sort of cash.

Sounds like a good deal - plenty of room for the user to grow into as well so they should avoid needing to upgrade for a reasonable while (although they'll probably upgrade after 6-12 months anyway, whether it's worth it or not!!!).

as it is a starter kit, have you looked at the Canon eos 1000d at tesco, £252 with cashback ????

They were competent with a SLR many years ago, so I imagine the D80 would probably offer that little bit extra in terms of usability. I also honestly can't see them upgrading, not the sort of person, if they bought a D80 tomorrow I bet they would still have it in 5 years time!
