Is this lens good? Should I get the newer version?

Hello,
Just a quick post about a lens I picked up a while back from a car boot sale. Its an old manual focus Nikkor 50mm F1.8, and is in very good condition (and was a VERY good price :D). It works brilliantly and its nice and sharp although ive been looking at these and they seem to be fetching £70-90 on eBay here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nikon-50m...=UK_Lenses_Filters_Lenses&hash=item2a15b89589

Does anyone think I should bother selling this and upgrading to the newer AF version, has anyone on here used it?

Thank you
Jack

you mean the Nikon 50mm f1.8 AFD?

If it is then i feel is ok to keep and don't bother upgrade unless you want the AF-S internal focus.

For me the 50mm f1.8D is dead dead sharp and is a good work horse as well, to me the image quality is no different between the two. Some will say their is different but for me i will stick with my 50mm f1.8 AFD.

Hi,
Sorry I forgot to mention that the lens I have is the old manual focus version of this lens :), but that sounds good would you say theres much difference between my old MF version and the AFD (if you've used the manual focus version?). I also see there's a 'G' version as well for a higher price.

The newer AFD version is better in every respect except build quality (the old lens is metal), I can't for the life of me work out why people would spend £70 for a MF lens when they could get the newer AF version for the same price (which has the same optical formula but better coatings, poorer build).

Granted, if you use an old MF film SLR then the aperture dial is a bit easier on the old lens and it's a little smaller in depth.

IMO the ONLY reason to get one of these lenses is if you have a MF film camera and you can find one for £30-40

I would say the AIS lenses are good if you have a pro camera like the D200 but I'm pretty sure the D80 will not meter with this lens so you would need to guess the exposure or use an external meter.

I think that even with pro bodies you are restricted to using Manual Exposure mode or Aperture Priority mode and cannot use P or S modes.

I much prefer to manually focus so the lack of AF would not bother me one jot.
