Right long story short for whatever reason i'm really interested in replicating this image:

raptdept.jpg

Now i have very (very) basic photoshop knowledge and was wondering the sort of level of task i am taking on could anyone give me a rough walkthrough of how i would go about producing the image?

Russ

i'd say it's possible quite easily actually, and it's also a great idea, basically you need 2 exposures one for the people and t'other for the shadows then it's basically placing one on top of the other using layers then erasing part of the top layer to reveal the bottom layer (if you know what i mean).

It's difficult to tell at this image size Russ, but that looks like a completely computer generated graphic? In other words probably produced with a graphics rendering package rather than Photoshop et al.

The shadows in that shot are completely at odds with the figures btw.

That makes sense! I was a bit concerned about making sure the shadows were the correct size and matched up correctly, i guess its just about layering them then erasing the right bits!

Anyone else?

Sorry CT do you mean that they arn't matching the figures. Thats purpose of the image

I have been reading about the Image and it is a photograph well two then layered he has done quite a few like this. He says that the idea of a 'independant shadow' was inspired by peterpan! and was attempting to capture a period of time within one photograph

Oh right! :D Peter Pan - with you now - I think.

In that case , pretty simple. two separate exposures- one for the figures and one for the shadows. Paste each image in turn over the background image and with the eraser tool erase the background from your figures image to leave the bg underneath.

Then do the same with the shadows image. The bits where the shadows cross the kerb and the pavement have probably been drawn in by hand.

Thanks all ill try and scope out a spot and give it ago, btw the guy that shot the image is Storm Thorgerson, google him. He did lots of album covers of the likes of pink floyd, led zepplin, muse, etc etc
