Yes
my old dell 1100 used to turn off after about 1/2 hour, due to overheating, so the dell forum told me to blow out any dust that there may be in there, so i opened up the comp and blew out the dust.
Trouble is, now the screen is yellow/red and i cant read it proporly, is it dying or dead.:'(

wipe all the new dust off the monitor and put it back in the computer!

seriously now folks, it sounds like when you put the video cable back in, either one of the pins is bent, or the plug isn't in straight

cheers mike, it works a treat now, thank you.
YIIIIIIIIIPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE................!

nice one Mike
if it continues to shut down there are several things you could try.
put an extra case fan in the case. The motherboard will almost certainly have an extra fan power socket.

Or you could oil the bearings on the CPU and Case fans .
I just did this on my Shuttle PC and it went from being a noisy monster with the fans always on to a silent PC with the fans on the lowest setting.
Carefully lift/peel back the paper label on the fans and put a tiny dab of sewing machine oil on the pivot/bearing replace the sticky labels and the difference in fan noise will be amazing.
(The fans slow down over time with continual heat and dust clogging the tiny bearings.

Even if the motherboard doesn't have a fan output, there's bound to by a spare molex on the psu loom that can be used to run another case fan.

ok ok so now your getting bigheaded :D
like i know what you mean:thinking:

open box.......find brightly coloured spaghetti
gaze upon spaghetti until you find a small plastic 4 pin plug about an inch across

plug fan into connector and watch as it trims your fingers off at the knuckles

ta daaaaaaaa

well, so far so good, it been on for 40 minutes and the fan hasn't even kicked in yet, its just sitting there looking at me.

lulling you into a false sense of security.......... then ...Whammo !

I would suspect the fan has had all it's magical moving pixies removed. Go to your local fan shop and buy a bag of Fan pixie dust or a new fan
:bonk:

that was prob90 the trubble all along!

btw was it just a loose plug?

hi
yes the screen wire plastic thingy had come loose from its mounting, but i blew out the inside of the fan and computer with a can of compressed air, seems to have done the trick.

cool!
I would worry that the fan "hasn't kicked in yet" - I would expect it to run continuously
Might be worth getting a new one

when i tried to 'open up' the computer the other night, i just couldn't get the final top part to come off, i wasn't sure what was still holding it together, and i didn't want to force it either, but as it was i managed to get the fan blown out, but not sure if i could change it, unless i manage to remove the top easier.

Lol, I knackered my Pc trying to reinstall XP because I got frustrated not being able to Install XP SP2. Can't use Lightroom without Sp2.

Unless you want to end up with a doorstop I would leave it to someone that is conversant with taking them apart. Most have hidden fixings ,switch panels that slide or prize apart. You could easily do irrepairable damage.
Laptop fans are usually part of the heatsink assembly and are often best replaced together. This means you will need to remove it from the CPU I asume this is your model yes? http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-inspiron-1100/4505-3121_7-21127907.html

Unless the laptop is getting noticebly hot I would just use it. It will automatically switch off if it gets too hot . Does the fan spin up when you first boot ? if so its fine
