Is the D300 much bigger than a D90?

No
I've been using a D90 for a couple of months now and an initial niggle is starting to snowball into frustration. The body doesn't fit comfortably in my large hands so after a short while of shooting I find myself juggling the camera around to prevent cramp in my fingers. I bought a grip in the hope that it would solve the problem but the 'bulge' of the grip is where my last two fingers sit so it's still uncomfortable for me to hold for any length of time.

So, I've been considering the options and the D300 has got my interest. How much bigger is the body compared to the D90? It looks a little taller in any comparison pics i've found but is it much chunkier?

It isn't hugely bigger but it is a lot heavier. I have average size hands and I find it fits better than the D90 but you will notice the weight difference because the build quality is better.

I thought that the D300 would be heavier being a metal construction but I was hoping it would be a bigger 'handfull'. Seems not then, cheers Andy.

(Provided I am correct in saying that the D200 & the D300 have basically the same body) then I found that the D200 was noticeably larger in the hands when being used. There is quite a difference between that and the D90 to hold and to use - the 200/300 feel quite a bit larger and more substantial. It is taller, wider and heavier.

As it was, for what I wanted the D90 was the more appropriate choice, but if I could of afforded it at the time, a D300 would have been up there in the option list.

Go to a shop and try one out - failing that, plenty of specialists have second hand D200's for sale - they are almost the same as the D300 so you should be able to get a feel for it.

The best way to describe it? The D90 fits in your hand, but you have to hold the D200/300.

Cant you get a grip for the d90

Barring the obvious longer run times available with twice the battery supply, the grip (I have the Nikon MB-D80 on mine) makes a big difference. I'm surprised that even gripped it doesn't feel right for you...?

I too have fairly large (skinny, gangly if you will!) hands but gripped makes it so much more comfortable, especially when I'm shooting hand-held with a 70-200 2.8 and SB-700 attached.

I don't have small hands or short fingers but i can just about reach the rear AF/ON button with my thumb whilst holding fire on the shutter on my D300, you must be well over 6ft tall if find your fingers/hands find a D300 too small.
Interesting thread !

I have a D300 and have consodered some of the lower spec Nikons as a back-up, but having held them in shops they just dont feel right the way that a D300 does, its about size, weight, and substance.

Cheers for all the input, some conflicting opinins so i think i'll have to get to a shop and try a d300 for size.

d300 and battery grip.

When I got my D90 I tried a 2nd hand D300 in the shop at the same time and came away with the D90 as the D300 was felt way to big for my little hands.

So, although they may not LOOK that different, the difference in hand is quite substantial so I would definitely try them out before buying anything.
