Hi all,

Just a quick one to gauge opinion. Would you consider the 40D to be a substantial upgrade to a 450D owner?

I am aware of fps and ISO etc. as well as waterproofing and build quality, but does it really offer that much more 'bang for the buck'?

Cheers.

If you could get the two for a similar price then it would be a no-brainer to chose the 40d but since you already have a 450 i'd say hold fire and just keep building up lenses. You have a pretty decent collection already i see, maybe a better telephoto if you use it enough could be the next move (heh i have the same one lol).

Can you name an area of your photography where the 450d is holding you back?

Your comment made me update my lens list! Yea, I think some a better telephoto would be useful perhaps.

I wonder about the 450D's low light performance with 1600 max ISO. I also find it a little awkward to handle being quite a small body. I know I could get a battery grip, but to me, thats spending £100 on something not doing an awful lot!

I have no experience of the Tamron lenses but although I like the Canon 17-85mm IS lens as an outdoor lens, It's not a very good indoors.
Even with ISO 1600 I think the kit lens out performs it indoors.
I have also considered a 40D but I've decided to stick with the 450D for now and upgrade to a 50D later in the year.

I too am considering upgrading my 450d to a 40d, same reasons ISO performance and AF could be improved and writing to SD is soooooo slow compared to CF

I started with a 400D, but when the mrs started using it and I didn't get a look in I bought a 40D and its a definate step up, much more features, much easier to change settings on the fly, I find it much easier to hold but my better half finds it too heavy. Auto ISO comes in handy at times too.

I think perhaps the 40D isn't quit enough of an upgrade to be worth the extra cash, so I will probably hold off and get a 50D later on in the year, apparently that is a considerable upgrade on the 40D itself.

15-30Mb/s = slow?? maybe you just have crap cards, i'm sure they exist on the CF side as well. My 8Gb £17 SD card regularly does 15-20mb/s and it isnt even an extreme series card.
