as the title really - i have a crappy Jessops tripod, and I've seen a few people praising the Manfrotto 785 for although it is lightweight, is perfectly suitable for photography use.

I am running 450D with standard 18-55 kit lens, and also a 55 - 250 lens for it also.

will it cope alright, or is it a bit flimsy for my needs?

i can get it for around £30, so it's not the cost of the earth either way

thanks in advance

I thought about one of the Modo tripods as a travel solution. Had a try of a couple in different shops and decided that they weren't up to the job. IMO, the legs are too thin and flexible, the head doesn't stay where put under pressure and on one of the examples I tried, the legs slid up through the clamps.

Generally with tripods, people want sturdy, light and cheap - at best, you'll get two of the requirements.

I use a Manfrotto 785B with my 30D and 18-55 IS. Purely as a stop-gap as it was my first tripod.

I have taken some razor sharp night shots on a 30 second exposure with it....BUT....only if there's no wind. Breezy day/night and it's no good for long exposures. *Definitely* no use for telephoto, wobbles all over the place if I put a 300mm on it. I've also never used it with the legs fully extended, try and keep it as low as possible for stability.

But, as a cheapo cheerful lightweight tripod that hooks on my Lowepro slingshot 100 and I can carry anywhere......works for me.

The manfrotto website has a handy and easy to use configurator Link which may help.

Yes it will be fine for the 450D plus 18-55 and 55-200 as long as its not too windy. I have used one with my D40X and 18-200 with sharp long exposures.

If its windy, then I tend not to use the lowest part of the legs which are the thinnest and instead raising the centre shaft to the height I need. It sacrifices some height but its more stable.

I bought one of these as the main spec I needed was for it to be light and compact for travelling.
I agree with the above comments, but an extra word of warning.
I had to take mine back because the clamp broke where the foot fits in. I very nearly lost my 400D into Whitby harbour.
The whole of the ball head is made of plastic and therefore not awfully strong.
I exchanged it for a Velbon Maxi-M. This one has a metal head, is still light and compact for travelling, but suffers frtom the same lack of rigidity. However, I was prepared to sacrifice rigidity for size and weight.

thank you all for your responses.

i suppose for £30 it's worth a punt - definitely better than Jessops own brand one anyway i'm sure!

I have that for my 450d and it works fine great little peice of kit.

I'm in a similar position and was thinking about the 785 but the loading rating is only 1kg, my 400D and 17-85/70-300 is 1.1kg so i'm guessing after a little use the ball head will slip.

However the next step up seems to be the 718:

I would prefer a ball head and something a little taller but it is designed to handle over double the load of a 785
