After upgrading from a Canon 350D to a 40D I am unable to convert my new RAW files using Rawshooter Essentials which has served me so well for my 350D files.

I've tried Raw Therapee and also Capture One V4 and I'm not sure I like them.

I also have Photoshop CS1 for post processing which suits me perfectly once I have the converted files to use.

Is Lightroom my only other option without upgrading my Photoshop?

Try a google for raw shooter essentials, free download. Excellent!

I think the OP already has RSE, trouble is it's not compatable with CR2 (it's not updated since adobe bought it out)
Another option is ACDC pro 2, I think that will open CR2's.

Digital Photo Professional And Canon Utilities Zoombrowser - Unless I'm missing something the 2 Canon applications don't have things like exposure adjustment or any of the finer adjustments I'm used to with Rawshooter.

Aperture - Doesn't Aperture only work on a Mac

Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera RAW - Camera RAW doesn't work with CS1 only CS2 upwards.

raw shooter essentials - Doesn't recognise 40D Raw files. I've used this with my 350D files with great success and gutted it doesn't work with 40D

Thanks everyone for their input.

DPP is OK, but I think you'll find it lacking compared to RSE. I used to use Capture One software, as I preferred it over Raw Shooter, but since Lightroom came out I've not touched it.

If you are looking for the ability to fine tune your images, I think you have to look at either Aperture, or Lightroom.

Can you not use Adobe's free DNG converter and then process the DNG version of the file in something like CS1 or RSE?

http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

If you want Photoshop on a budget then what about Photoshop Elements?

I've read I could use the free DNG convertor and then use the CS1 that I do have to do the rest.

In fact I've just downloaded it and given it a go and it works perfectly.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. It's an extra step in the workflow but one I can live with. :)

lightroom maybe not your only option as youve found out, but it may be the better option still. Non destructive raw editing with a organiser too. an invaluable tool

i would use lightroom or aperture. Even though i am on a mac i prefer lightroom. mainly for the speed of using presets to quickly view pics. I prefer aperture for a more professional portrait workflow.

According to Adobe's website, CS2 doesn't support newer versions of Camera RAW - I couldn't find a RAW converter for the D3x that would play on CS2 so we had to but CS4 - I think it's a deliberate ploy by Adobe to keep people upgrading to the latest version...

Another +1 here for lightroom, it's brilliant, yes photoshop is needed for some of the more intensive editing but for the majority of photo's lightroom will cope perfectly well
