Haven't done too much with it since but after a little play with the improved clone/heal brush, radial filter and straighten tool I think it was money well spent

If you upgrade to LR5, it will "upgrade" your catalog and AFAIK there's no way to downgrade.
You could make a backup of your LR4 catalog, then uninstall LR4 and install LR5. If you do decide, to move back, you can uninstall LR5, install LR4 and use the backup catalog you made previously.
I think, there is enough benefits to LR5, that you will probably want to stay with LR5.
