A Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS?

I only have a 18-55 IS kit lens otherwise and I find the gap to 70mm kinda big sometimes. It sounds like a no brainer with IS in the equation also.

Hi Bradley and welcome to the forum, the sigma 70-300 is a great lens for the price but I think you have already made up your mind, as you say the gap between 55 and 70 is too much. I have heard good things about the 55-250 so I doubt you would be disappointed with it if you decide to go that route.

Well I already have the Sigma. I would sell that and try find a 2nd hand canon.

I have just bought the 55-250 IS and I am mightily impressed with it. No wonder they call it the Nifty Two fifty!

Although im happy with the Sigma I think in the long run the Canon will offer me more. I find the Sigma alittle soft between 200-300mm. Thanks for all the help

I loved my 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro, but find the Canon 55-250mm much better. First it has IS, which means that at 250 you can reasonably hand hold in less than perfect conditions and not have to use ISO800+. This makes the lens far more usable especially as the noise on the 400d is not great once you go above ISO400.

Another vote from me on the 55-250mm - its a cracking lens, very light, compact and gives my 70-200 F4L lens a decent run, very impressive quality, given its price of ~£170 new or ~£135 s/hand - and an ideal lens to take travelling where weight is a issue.
