Yes
I really want a D300, but dont think I`ll get one on my budget, so It is worth my while buying a d200?

Still a decent camera, no?

I want one as well as a second body. Most cameras seem out of date quickly but are they really? I have a D50 and apart from the 6mp it is fine and does most of what I want.

Just ask yourself why you need to upgrade and then you know whats right.

i'd go for the s5 over a d200 myself but that's just personal preference

some questions to ask yourself

1) what will the new body do for you
2) is it lack of glass that stopping you
3) definitively what are you aiming to achieve

then make some decisions :)

COZ I WANT ONE!!!! :)

I have a D40, Think I want to upgrade for more ease of use.. not having to navigate through menus to change iso etc.. all at side on touch of a button. there are a few other things... but those are just personal prefs

yeh , someone had mentioned the s5 to me.

1. i think I need to get to a shop & handle a couple of cameras, but D40 seems dinky.. too small in my hands

2. dont think so.. have a 50mm, 18-200mm VR sigma 70-300 VR Nikkor & a cheapie 500mm from feabay. enough to be getting on with
3. i know where i want to end up, & think I need decent kit to get there.

D200 is a good semi pro body.........

It is crap at high ISO,above 400 IMO................

I have one and use it a lot, especially landscape stuff..........

The D200 is a great camera I've produced some very good perfectly saleable results even at 1600 ISO. I've used my 2 for both events and weddings for the last year. If you can't stretch to a D300 now it is definitely worth considering (same pictures as a D80 but much better handling and far better built). I would completely recommend one to the budget concious photographer (get a low click example from someone established on here and I don't think you'd go far wrong)

As said you also have the option of the Fuji S5 Pro which is basically a D200 Body with Fuji insides. However, they are 2 completely different cameras and cannot really be compared. The D200 is a great all rounder where as the S5 Pro still holds the Dynamic Range crown (even better than the D700) which makes the S5 Pro ideal for a DX format landscape, portrait, wedding machine. The S5 Pro is very slow compared to the D200 and nearly every other camera on the market.

So yes the D200 is still a great camera

I have 2 and an S5 Pro (which is also great)

I think I'd be more inclined to get a D90 than a D200 - much newer sensor with improved ISO performance.

True and worth thinking about you need to be shooting lots in low light where ISO performance is an issue.

However, the D90 (or D80) doesn't have the same level of build quality as the D200 or the ease of use that a Semi-Pro body (like the D200) has.

Perfectly good cameras the D200's, have done well with the two I have, and have certainly managed to produce some very saleable images from mine. I still use them as backup bods and now have a D3, noise aside with the d200''s I've found the metering tends to hunt a little, soemtimes producing various over / under exp, I remember reading on a site sometime ago relating to this and a firmware problem that becomes apparent when using higher ISO's. Also took a long time to get the colour saturation I wanted in camera, rather than pp.

I use mine all the time as its a fantastic all rounder as for the iso I dont think its as bad as some say it is, yes all cameras produce some noise but the D200 is prone to more noise upwards of 800iso but I only shoot in good light so really not an issue for me
