Is It Just Me - Or Does This Annoy You Too?

Maybe you should duck and go ;)
Duck Duck's fine but limited. I still find Google quicker and more comprehensive, especially when looking for information that may only appear on one or two sites.

I've been a coach/instructor/teacher in several different fields in my lifetime and have always enjoyed helping people, but as I can't get out as much now due to physical limitations, I can still use what's in my head - this is one of the reasons I like computer forums. I love to keep learning and I find helping others learn helps me learn more too.

Gone are the days of having to seek out books (remember them) in the local library or trying to find somebody who may know the answer to your questions. We now have all the information we could ever want at our fingertips. The knowledge and wisdom of almost anyone of note who has lived in the last five thousand years is there for the taking - and mostly free.

Why is it then, that people are so lazy that they can't be bothered to do a basic search? There are so many questions asked on this forum (and others) that could so easily be answered by just a few key clicks. Most phones will do it if you speak, you don't even have to type.

However, these people would rather just type a question and then sit back expecting someone to give their time to explain it for them. Then when they get some answers, they will often argue and disagree, rather believing the bullsh!t hype given in advertising. The worst of all being the ones who disappear never to be seen again without even clicking a 'like' let alone saying thank you.

It won't be long before people get so lazy, they will need machines to help them breathe. :banghead:

Where someone wants an opinion then I can understand posting a question online, eg someone is thinking of buying XY or Z and wants to know from people who own one, what they think about it.

However, I see quite a few threads around the small bits of the Web I use where the answer would have been found much more quickly by using Google, and I agree I do not understand why some do not, it appears, use the facilities available online more, themselves.

I wonder if there is an age element involved. As a fully paid up old fart when I wanted to know something years ago the only option was a visit to the library. An example of this was the annual summer holidays where we would choose an area and borrow books and guides to find out what was there. I still do the same thing now but I now use the Web rather than the library. If I can't find out what I want then I might ask online.

As alluded to above some questions are poorly framed and it is easy to get the wrong end of the stick but I think all of us(and that includes me) should bear in mind we know all the background information about our question - others do not; but I also think in many cases the answer could be found online.

And those of us(me included again) who get a bit annoyed about some threads should remember we do not have to respond.

Indeed - this is why I no longer respond to them.

Experience has shown me that in the majority of cases where they have shown their laziness by asking in such a way, it's almost guaranteed that they'll probably either take no notice or not even hang around long enough to read the replies. Of those that do, very few will bother to say thank you.

That's true, but it works for me most of the time. I'm not a Google fan and I prefer not to use any of their 'services' if there's a reasonable alternative.

Google is generally excellent for science related stuff that I use for work, but more 'conventional' wisdom (i.e. trying to solve computer problems) it can suck a bit.
