Is it cruel?

My wife and I, in Lieu of having children (ack...spit spit..hate them), would dearly love to get a Cat.

The problems are twofold - one, we are both full time workers and sometimes have quite late nights.

Two? We have a tiny tiny flat, that has a front door out to a main road, and the Tube running behind us.

Would having a Cat be cruel? We can't even have a catflap installed as we only have one door to the flat, so it would have to be let out (and back in, hopefully!).

We've never owned a Cat before, but feel the need for something furry - but we really have the nagging feeling that our current situation would be unfair to the creature!

Sorry, I think you are right, a cat is not right for you at this moment in time. Not really the size of flat, cats are happy in boxes as long as they can toilet away from their food and have a snuggly place to lie, but with a main road and a tube line so close, its increasing the odds of death quite considerably. As a cat owner/lover, I hate the idea of 'house cats' - just not natural as far as I am concerned [but it is one of my pet hates , others would probably disagree] We have a pedigree cat that looks poncy but is free to roam the local gardens and she is very happy. We got another, but depite living in a very quiet residential suburban area, she was killed at a year old by the neighbour [80 yr old woman in a bloody nissan micra] running her over whilst pulling onto driveway - but I dont regret allowing her freedom for her year, better that she loved the outdoors than went mad inside IMO. So you see what I mean by your circumstances increasing that risk. Unless you can find an adult cat at a rescue centre that is used to living in such circumstances [and some are, so dont discount it entirely] I would avoid it for now.

Cats are not pets , they are destructive killing machines . So far this weekend my neighbours 'Pet' has killed two Voles & one baby Blackbird in my garden :thumbsdown:

We would love a cat (we're right with you on the kids thing!), but haven't got one for those reasons. We both work full time so there would be no-one around all day, and we live near a busy road. It's just not fair on the cat. Cats need love & attention and if there's no-one home all day, what's the point in getting one?

I've had a house cat before which worked ok as I lived in a bigger house, and she had the house and garden to play in, but if you have a tiny flat, this may not be such a good idea. Maybe consider something else such as a guinea pig / chipmunk/ chinchilla which are all furry and make good pets :shrug:
