Is a konig lightstand safe to use with smartflash?

For a Smartflash and softbox, get a proper stand. These cheap light stands are only really suitable for flashguns, brollies, reflectors etc.

+1
The only good point I see in this product in the double bracing!

Thank you both for the help.

I already have a konig light stand and want to know if it is safe to be used with a lencarta smartflash (indoor use only)?

It'll work but you'll be better off in the long run finding a good quality stand (the Konig's tend to become stiff and the cheap spigots don't help), if budget is a problem try to source something like a second hand Elinchrom clip lock or Bowens 6605.

Thanks Simon. Not 100% which route to take. Either use just the flash I have or invest in one studio light. Already have an umbrella, softbox and yn622n trigger.

Do you feel your current flash isn't giving you something you need?

No, flash is fine but with the studio light I can see the light placement and fall off which is the reason I was thinking of getting a studio light. Might be the wrong reason.

It's a good reason, also the recycle times. If you're shooting in a static environment, a proper studio light is the right tool for the job.

Hi Phil, could you link to a proper stand as I only ever come across eBay specials!

Look for something air cushioned and usually they're 2.5 or 3m too, you can go straight to Lencarta, Bessel etc but you can get them from ebay if you search air cushioned.

proper light stand from brand name manufacturers are so expensive why do manufacturers assume all photographers have huge amounts of disposable income. After all a light stand is not a complicated device so for manufacturers there are no R&D costs as there are many established design concepts.
My friend who is a DJ can buy a loudspeaker stands suitable for supporting 8-10 Kg speakers for £25.00 ish. Speaker stands share the same design concept as light stands but are much sturdier than similar priced photographic light stand.
Why do sturdy light stand cost roughly 3 times the price of loud speaker stands?

Get the Lencarta stand, GREAT quality, I got some cheap eBay ones once and they are junk, had to fix them before use or the top pin was likely to just fall out, I still have them, use them for holding a reflector at most but NEVER any strobes, I use the Lencarta stands for my good gear. Funny thing is the Lencarta stands are not that much more cash but they are ten times better stands.

Only one good thing about my cheap stands, if I drive off and forget one it will save me tuning round to get it lol

They don't, they're generally around £30.

But you're right PA stands are sturdier and a similar price (and what I use for backdrops).

Light stands that are as sturdy as DJ speaker stands do not cost £30.

I've never used stands aimed at DJs but I've come to the conclusion that studio equipment in general is priced as if you were going to use it for several years otherwise the numbers make no sense; I've got some Elinchrom stands that are older than some photographers I've met and work just as well as a current one.

If those stands are directly comparable to the better ones meant for lighting why not just resell them as such? Should be easy money (I'm not being sarcastic).

I can't really agree with that - speaker stands are bulky and heavy, and tend either not to be moved around at all or moved around in vans, they are made from steel which, compared to the lightweight alluminium lighting stands that photographers need, are very cheap to make.
And decent lighting stands are air damped, which is an added production cost too.
And it isn't correct to say that there are no R&D costs either, our own stands have a patented locking mechanism that is bombproof but which requires very little effort - and it costs a fortune to patent products.

I can't be the only person that finds air cushioned stands an expensive nuisance?

Seriously, get an air-cushioned job. I got a nasty finger injury which was nearly much worse when I mistakenly unlocked a section of a Konig one and it descended rapidly. It only had a speedlite & small softbox on it at the time. I'm very pleased with my Polaroid jobby - which claims to take more weight and has a wider footprint than the Lencarta equivalents.

Ditto.

Happened to me and was very sore. Pressed on it for ages as I had a decent chunk of finger affected. Probably should have had stitches in retrospect.

Shaheed, I'm very sympathic.
I really am... seriously.
But as a medical doctor, you of all people should know that you should avoid the risk of injury by not buying other makes of lighting equipment:)

I'd like to add this was before I had the air damped lencarta stands!! It's an old pic and was meant to warn people against avoiding air damped stands!!
