Hiya I’m a photographer thinking of getting the GoPro hero 9!
I own high quality cameras already however for when I go on holiday I want something waterproof and smaller instead of lugging round a big DSLR however the downfall with being a photographer is I have high standards I would like the GoPro to live up to!
Obviously I know it will never match the quality of my canons ect however I don’t want to pay £350+ for images and videos which look like I’ve taken them on my phone!

Do you all recommend a GoPro for a photographers holiday camera or should I just stick to lugging around one of my DSLR’s

Thank you have a good day!!

I had the 4. At the time it was mainly for Disney and to use on rides with a wrist strap or in waterparks. Basically didnt want to be dropping my phone. For that its perfect, for normal video would rather use the DJI vlogging camera or iphone. Stills were not that great but the 9 could be a lot better.

A GoPro isn't a holiday camera, its designed primarily as an action camera - diving/swimming/skiing/motor racing / mounting biking. Use your phone or a compact camera instead.
Thank you! But our holiday is going to be quite an active one eg snorkelling, hiking, boat trips, surfing. So I just worry we might not be able to capture everything we want with a compact camera?

Maybe something like the Olympus Tough?

Smartphone size sensor with all the advantages and disadvantages of course.

I would say a Go Pro is perfect - and would choose that ahead of the Olympus as you can go hands free with it. A chest, head or wrist mount means you dont have the hassle of carrying the camera. On a surf board for example you may want some footage with the GoPro attached to the board looking back at you.

The Olympus will capture everything even stuff before & after you fire the shutter, so if that’s the main criterion …

Yup, Olympus ProCapture.................a very useful function ;)

PS also a function I have only read about "SloMo video" shoots at 120fps and plays back at 30fps ~ cool, depending the subject matter.

I use a selection of cheap (7dayshop) action cameras that usually come with a waterproof housing. Beachproof, small, decent enough quality (for small prints and general TV viewing of video) and cheap enough not to worry about.

Mildly ironically, I've had several "waterproof" cameras that have ended up leaking (terminally!) but have yet to drown any of the super cheapos (£25 is my ceiling so far.)
