reading a story in the local paper has made me wonder what you have to do to lose the right to drive.

a woman killed a mother and seriously injured her husband who were cycling at the time, according to her mobile phone records she was on the phone 2 minutes before the crash.

her defence argued and won based on the fact she wasn't in control of the vehicle at the time of the crash due to suffering a reflex syncope, a blackout or had fainted.

If she had based her case on the fact she collapsed at the wheel why has she been allowed to keep her licence

Drive at 35mph 4 times in a year and you're banned:thinking:

so is it a right to drive or a privilege which should be revoked permanently for the worst drivers

If you ahve a blackout it should be reported to dvla who will revoke your licence..

I ahve epilepsy but its a straing that only effect me in my sleep.. but as soon as they know I had it they first took my licence then gave it me back and I had to renew every 3mths i think it was then 6mths then every yr then every three yrs until eventually they gave it me back full.. I am still barred from ever driving a HGV just for being on the list at one time ..

DVLA would check wiht my doctors or whatever that i hadent had any problems in order to renew

I just got the jist of what Kipax said, and yes if you have control and no if you dont, but fools who shouldnt be driving and know it, should be jailed if they cause any death...to me thats manslaughter

do i read that article correctly, where it says that she may not have her licensed revoked...... hang on a minute.

i hope they still charged her for driving whilst on her mobile and speeding, although i guess she was blacked out during them as well..

sets a dangerous precedent as far as i can see

I have epilepsy and have the 3 year renewed license however if I had a seizure and reported it then my license would be taken from me. I dont know how it is any different from this woman, I would hope she has a temporary ban until her condition is sorted.

That's what I don't get, her defence has argued she collapsed at the wheel and wasn't in control at the time she killed someone, surely that should be an automatic decision, you're not fit to drive by your own admittance, hand in your licence:shrug:

Agreed

Very much a privelege and one that should (IMO) be retested for every 5 years or so, as well as every driver having to provide a medical certificate to show that their doctor knows of no reason why they shouldn't be allowed the privelege.

Agree with Nod the only problem being is the cost it would place on us.
