I cant afford a decent flashgun at the moment but could do with one, ill have dosh later in the year for a good quality one.

Is getting something cheap and cheerful not going to produce good results? is it worth me not bothering till I can get a good one?

It depends on the flash really! Most proper flashguns will be better than the pop-up flash! I wouldn't bother getting one though unless the head can move, so it can be bounced off ceilings and so on, I've found that's by far the biggest advantage. And you can always look at it this way: if you get a cheap flash now, down the line when you get a better one, also get some remote triggers and you'll have a multi-flash setup! Google "strobist" for lost more ideas!

How much am I looking at for one that spec Simon?

Nikon-wise your entry level is the SB-400 which is designed to go with the D40/D60 models , you should still be able to get a new one for around £100. Next up is the SB-600 which will now set you back £200 or more new.

The alternative is one of the cheapies, like the Jessops 300AFD. There is a Nikon version of that available for £34, it's a decent wee gun with a tilt head and a zoom facility which you can also use off-camera in slave mode, triggered by the pop-up flash on your D60.

Cheers mate, my D60 isnt listed as compatible though. Id buy that then this summer buy a pricier one if ive been using and learning from this one.

The Jessop model only bounces, there is a Nissin model Di622 for £100 that bounces and rotates. There are also reports that it works with the Nikon Commander system, seems like a cut price SB600.

The SB600 is probably worth looking at too S/H, I've seen a few at the £125 mark.
