Is 40d on the cards?

It would seem so I think. There is certainly something in the offing, if only because of the introduction of the 30D cashback (which I missed out on :( )

I'd expect an announcement in Feb, with a March/April release? Or am I wrong.

History shows that Canon's shelf life of their consumer range of digital slr cameras is 18 months. This would point to a revised 5D model in the spring rather than 30D. I don't pretend to have any idea what they might do to improve on the 5D without risking potential sales of the 1D series (e.g. I'd love it even more if it had 13 point AF). I guess the anti-dust arrangement? Hardly worthy of all the marketing on it's own.

As for Canon needing to bring out a 30D replacement with more pixels? I don't think they'll see it as a priority. The pixel race is primarily concerned with the beginner/entry level cameras. By the time most upgraders are looking for their next camera they'll have found that noise at higher ISO settings is far more limiting than whether the new model can produce A2 sized prints rather than A3+. The Nikon D80, like the new Sony and Pentax models are viewed by the press as competitors to Canon's 400D, not the 30D.

I don't see Canon's 30D and Nikon's D200 being in direct competition with each other either as I believe the vast majority who own these two cameras upgraded from an entry level model of the same make and so didn't think that taking a loss on selling their lenses to pay for replacements to suit their uprgaded camera as a worthwhile excercise.

In my opinion when Canon do eventually produce an upgrade of the 30D it will need to have better performance at higher ISO settings over an increased number of pixels, since it's target market will be more demanding than the entry level purchaser. Who knows, they may even bring out a 1.3x model based on the 1DmkIIN with a larger sensor that has a combination of more pixels but also larger pixels to help it outperform the 1.6/1.5x sensor models.

i was hoping santa would bring me a 5d or i could persuade by boss into buying me one. should i wait? either for new cam or 5d price fall.

I agree that the 30d wont be around too much longer. Theres no way that Canon can have a more expensive model with less mp. Regardless of whether mp is actually important, it confuses the hell out of the market!

If that is the case where does the 8.2MP EOS-1D Mark II N fit in ??

If you look at the current range price downwards the mega pixel count goes

16.7
8.2
12.8
8.2
10.1
8.0 (350D still listed as current on Canon site)

Canon normally have an 18 month cycle time so your looking late autumn 2007 for the 30D replacement
