As a bit of background, a month ago my daughter spent 4 days in hospital due to a urinary tract infection and as a result is on medication until she is out of nappies, and has to go for 2 more scans to check for reflux and damage/scarring to her kidneys.

Yesterday she was taken into Dewsbury hospital with a temperature of 40.3 degrees celcius (last time it hit 41.7) vomiting, lethargy etc.

Where did they put her (and 2 other babies with very similar symptoms admitted today while we were there)?

They put a baby with a fever in a boiling hot ward (with almost no ventilation) where she had no chance of cooling down at all :bang:

Apparently they had been trying to get the mobile air conditioning unit repaired for a few days...

It was actually cooler outside in the hallways than it was in there but we weren't allowed to take Hannah off ward :(
 
She's your daughter, if you think they are endangering her health you take here anywhere you please. If you get any trouble ask for names so you can include them in your letter to the papers.
 
Fortunately they have confirmed that the blood and urine tests show that the infection is viral as opposed to bacterial so the two infections are unrelated - so she is now back at home where she belongs and we are both happy (and relieved that we didn't have to stay over).
 
no but she is doped up with calpol and ibuprofen which both help with fever.

They told us that having a fan directly on to her was a bad idea for cooling her down as although her skin temperature would go down, her internal temp would go up to compensate - so ice is definitely out! ;)

Glad to hear she is home - hope she gets better soon.
Sounds about right for the NHS - nothing works, and the wards are always far too hot then they wonder why babies have high temperatures... wel duh!!
 
Ain't that the truth, matty. My smallest has been throwing up with all this heat. He's perfectly happy, and that, but heat and small kids definitely do not mix.

A hot ward is only gonna be a breeding ground for germs and other nasties - I'm glad you've got her home, Braeden. Hope she's better soon!
 
Hopes shes well soon, atleast they have started the treatment, could have still been waiting for a diagnosis in many cases.

Cant stand this summer heat myself so feel for anyone whos suffering and also has to contend with it.
 
Hope your littleun is well again mate. I know what it's like to have sick kids. I got one at the moment with chicken pox. Luckily it hasn't even phased him, but the heat really is getting to him.

They find it hard sleeping, and just cannot function properly in reallkyhot stick sweaty muggy weather (not that this dad's any better of course...lol)

Seriously, glad she's back home in a comfortable environment. There's nothing worse than having to trapse back and forth to hospitals when they can be looked after at home.

Calpol and Ibuprofen (we use Calprofen or Nurofen Kids) are fantastic. We tend to use the first for minor complaints and temperature problems, and Nurofen when Calpol fails....

And they can have them both together which is a bonus :thumbs:
 
sorry to here that mate, but like mini said it's about right for the NHS. the wards and clinics im in at the min are baking hot, some clinic rooms have no windows at all and closed doors, it's horrible. the craziest bit is that the admin staff all have aircon in thier offices??!! i even found one of the radiators on in a corridor the other day!

ps. paracetamol (calpol) is our choice on the wards for a temperature :)
 
Hope your little one is doing ok now, theres nothing worse for a parent than seeing you little one suffer.
Must be a nightmare trying to keep her cool at the moment, really sympathise.

I got bitten in a field 3 weeks ago, and NOW my finger has swollen & is throbbing so bad it had me up at 4.30am, driving me nuts ...even I feel like crying like a baby!
 
Hi Braeden,

My youngest spent a lot of time last year in St George's in Tooting, so I know all about spending time in hospital with a baby, paticularly when it's hot. No fun.

My wife has just bought a cooler unit from Comet which you put ice in, it is really helping him to sleep at night. Well worth the 60 quid or so it cost...
 
Aircon units don't seem so expensive when this sort of thing occurs do they?

I have no experience with babies/kids, so I can't offer you any advice.
