Ive seen mention of these filters around and the concept interests me so what do they do and does anyone have any sample images taken with an IR filter?

Also what are peoples opinions of an IR Filter is it worth keeping one in the kit bag?

an IR filter basically blocks all light except infra red light, the filter doesn't work on all cameras though, the best way to find out is by taking a picture of a remote control whilst you are pressing a button, or if it has live view press the button whilst looking at your cam screen. Ir filters are fun and handy to have in your kit but they are also quite expensive too. I have one but haven't used it loads tbh, i wouldn't get rid of it though so it;s in my kit all the time should i ever want to use it.
 
I love IR, but it can take very long exposures (up to 5 minutes). And results can often be hit or miss depending on temperatures of things etc. My favourite one so far;

wow both images look great :) so i suppose the only question left is will an IR filter work ok on a Nikon D40

Yup. The shots above was taken on a D40X so it should work fine on a D40 (Infact I think it might work even better than on my D40X due to the hotmirror being less effective on the D40.)
 
I bought a IR filter for my D80 several months ago but didnt have a tripod, so long exposures were out of the question. The little amount of light it let through meant an image of red dots!

Now I have a tripod so I'll give it another go on bulb and see what the results are like.
