I need to add IPTC data to photos, now, can I do this in GIMP? , if not is their any free software(Mac) that can do this?

Rudi, without wishing to be rude (no pun intended) you've asked several questions regarding wiring pitchside etc, etc, you really need to be talking to the agency who offered you the work, they should have all the information you need regarding which software you should be using, they will probably have a preference as to what you should be using.

You need to be talking to them about this and all the other issues you've raised, if they cant tell you then walk away and look elsewhere
 
Ok Gary, Thanks for the reply, too cut a long story short, I know a guy that does photos at football games etc for a company and thought that mine were on a par with his and thought I had a chance of doing the same. I contacted the company and they told me to send them 10 of my best shots,I did and the guy said photos were spot on but he needed the IPTC data on the photos.
He realised I didn't really know what he was talking about and basically Told me too bolt .

I totally agree with Gary!
Sorry you had a knock back but expect a lot of that unless you are up to speed with the image transfer side of the operation!.
I would recommend Photomechanic as an ingest/captioning tool as it's a proven programme with a lot of photographers!.
Sorry to repeat myself but if you are certaine you wish to try your hand at this footy pic larky, get to know your equipment & i don't just mean camera!. that beleive me is the easy part!!. Find out from your friend, (dunno why he hasn't helped out anyway?), what the agency requires you to use in all aspecs of image transfer & practice, practise, practise, then when you feel comfertable approach the agency again with images containing any relavent metadata required. I have had some wine now so excuse if this doesn't make sense to man nor beast..

Photomechanic (often referred to as PM ) costs about £95. If you are serious you can learn how to use it at home and how to add IPTC data, how to ingest photos in to it etc.

Look here on Camerabits youtube page (Camerabits make PM) https://www.youtube.com/user/CameraBitsInc

But as Graham says you should ask your friend to show you as it will be far quicker to learn that way.

However to get you up and learning you can download a 30 day trial of PM from here http://www.camerabits.com/downloads/

Then download from my dropbox 4 files. actions.txt, Charlton Athletic.txt and Leeds United.txt & Charlton Athletic vs Leeds test.xmp from here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/h5ksmz2fzq61mub/pjJQyzp6nH

Then load up PM and click Edit > Settings > Set Code Replacements. Click Add, then one by one load in the 3 .txt files you downloaded from my Dropbox & click OK.

Then in PM click Image > IPTC Stationary Pad, then at the bottom click Load and find the Charlton Athletic vs Leeds test.xmp then click Open and then Close Stationary.

Ok then click File > Open Contact Sheet and find a folder that you have some images in.

Then click Ctrl+A to select all the images, then click Ctrl+I (which will bring up the IPTC Stationary Pad), the click at the bottom Apply Stationary to Selected.

Ok now your images have a base IPTC applied.

On your first image, move your move over it and click on the I.

You should have a flashing cursor in the top box on the left. if not move your move there and click.

The type the following \c4\ \v\ \l21\ and press your space bar. It should now read as

Charlton Athletic's Johnnie Jackson vies for possession with Leeds United's El-Hadji Diouf

The \c4\ \v\ \l21\ comes from the actions.txt file that you loaded earlier. You can edit this all you like to words/phrases that you/your agency like.

There you go, you have now added IPTC and code replacements to an image.

Then click Ctrl+N and this will save the IPTC to that image and move on to the next images.

So your challenge is figure out how to Ingest images in and apply IPTC on Ingest.

i.e. Most people on here are happy to help as long as you are willing to learn and that you are also willing to learn things by yourself with some guidance.

I hope that is helpful. Please let us know how you got on and when you can ingest photos and apply IPTC from your memory card.

I'm thinking of using photo mechanic, and giving the trial a work out. Would you mind if I did the download of your files and have a go as described above please ?

The reason I'm not asking my friend is because he uses PS and I'm trying to use GIMP.

Does your friend do his IPTC captioning in PS or just the crop, straighten lighten, darken etc?

I am assuming you mean to apply the IPTC on ingest. If so I know most people do it that way.

I don't as I import in to Lightroom, edit, export and have PM watching my export folder.

I am therefore only having images I know I want to FTP coming in to PM.

Rob, you have an action.txt file to add a description of the "action" into your IPTC via code replacement. I have a similar file, but use the autocomplete feature in PM to accomplish the same result.



Autocomplete

If you find yourself typing the same terms repeatedly, you might want to turn on the Autocomplete feature. This function was introduced in Photo Mechanic 4.6.x and is another method that can speed you caption writing and metadata annotating. This real-time word completion feature can use lists of terms in a text file you create, words within the IPTC field lists you have created or even items from the {variables} menu. This feature is off by default, but you can enable it with by accessing the Set Autocomplete... menu item within the Settings submenu under the main Edit menu.

Enable the Autocomplete feature to speed up your caption and metadata writing.

To use this feature, begin tying normally. When Autocomplete senses you’re entering the first few letters of one of the stored words or phrases, it locates the first alphabetical match and completes the word, highlighting the remaining letters to the right of your cursor. If the word you see doesn't match, keep typing until Autocomplete finishes the word you want, or until you type the entire word. This feature works best with single words, but will work with phrases, as well – although not as effectively. This is because Autocomplete only considers the last word typed and will start looking up words that start with the first letter of the next word in the phrase. Camera Bits says this will improve in future releases.

When creating Autocomplete text files, make sure you only enter one word (or phrase) per line. If any of the words contain letters with diacriticals (tildes, umlauts, or other accented characters) or are written in a non-Roman script such as Japanese (Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji) you will need to save the text file using UTF-8 encoding.

I know I'm digging up an old thread, but would you kindly post up those files again, I don't do much sport photography but I would be interested to see how you fill out the IPTC data.
