I've just spent the best part of a day recovering and restoring all my 12000 shots kept in iPhoto '11. I had downloaded all my shots of the Reading 1/2 Marathon yesterday to my iMac desktop and was just starting to move them around when the machine froze.

I think it had indigestion trying to deal with Photostream, which was turned on, and the other actions.

I couldn't recover the files 100% as there was a lot of corruption so have now cleaned it all up with a reinstall from backup and the recent shots from iCloud.

I noticed today there was an update to iPhoto in the App store to deal with certain issues. seems to be ok now but I'll not be placing too many demands on the machine's memory (4Gb) and processor in the future.

Scary stuff! Anybody else had similar problems?

Does anybody on here use iPhoto for managing their photo collections? Any tips?

i have used iphoto but found that its just not up to the job if you have a lot of files - move over to apeture or use lightroom they are both worth the money, were all your shots large raw files by any chance ? also how many did you import / trying to save ? i was at the reading 1/2 marithon too , right in front of the guy that died very sad day :(

Thanks for the response Tom.
It was about 150 large jpegs. I'm just going to have to be more careful about managing it I think. I got my LR4 through today but have a bit to learn before I'm comfortable with using it to handle all my files.

I'll be sticking with iPhoto for showing the pics to people especially through Apple TV as it works well for that using faces and albums etc.
