No
I am in need of iPhone Tethering as I am away on a course the entire next week and the hotel charges are just monstrous. :gag:

Can some iPhone Guru out there explain me how I go about it. Do I need a cable or can I connect via iPhone's and laptop's bluetooth?

Also, my iPhone is officially unlocked by O2 to work on any network.

Anyone?

Check with your service provider. I'm on Orange and they charge a monthly fee to allow tethering. Bit of a rip off if you ask me. Dongle might be cheaper.

Unless you have a jailbroken iPhone, you will need to get your operator to enable tethering.

I'm not with T-Moble although I assume that they will charge you for the priviledge.....O2 certainly do!

There was an app in the App Store that allowed this, but got pulled when service providers objected. Not sure if you can do it any more.

If there is a local McDonald's nearby , use that. Free Wi-Fi, with every Big Mac ;)

The official operators use a specific data apn for tethering which you will need to get added to your account at extra cost. As F3TT said the only other way to do this is to jail break the device, this then allows you to edit the tethering apn (using custom ipcc file) to be the same as the standard data apn (the one used by safari etc)

Unless you do something that your operator wouldn't be happy with you have to pay £15 or more for the data addition.

Then you simply go into the menu and switch tethering on then connect the USB lead from your iPhone to the computer. The computer will then detect the iPhone as a network device and connect to the internet through it. It was possible to allow tethering without paying for it at one time but the loop hole has been closed with a software update.

If your iphone is Jailbroken you can use a piece of software called PDANET but neither apple nor UK providers would condone it's use. If you tether any way other than by paying your provider for the service, technically it'd be illegal. The cheap way to do it would be pay as you go dongle.

Also, O2 give you free wifi with loads of hotspots, not sure what other providers give you.

I would go for O2 dongle with O2 iPhone Pay & Go sim.
As you can use wifi hotspots too..

But I suggest O2 should make better support for *** who travel via Trains alot

I know its easier to carry a dongle but the reality is that when you have an iphone thats exactly what you do have already... a high speed modem.

02 and Voda are being really cagey about this as they are making you pay an extra £15 or so to browse the internet using your computer rather than the iphone for fear of you jamming the 3G network but the reality is that most people are only going to use it for occasional use, browsing and emails etc.

I am not on an iphone tariff but I do have a data tariff on my Voda connection which comes with a 3GB allowance, yet to use that 3GB allowance I can only use my iphone. I am not even allowed to tether and use this allowance on my laptop, to do that I would need to pay another £15!

I have gone down the route of using a Three MIFI and so far has been a decent buy, however it would be sooo much easier if I could just use my phone!

I know, it really annoys me. I would use the tethering very rarely but it would be useful to be there and i'm not paying £15 every month just on the off chance.
