Hi Everyone,

My current contract on 3 is up for renewal and (surprise surprise) I want an iphone :p

I don't know if anyone has seen, but they have released the tarriff details, and they are essentially no different to O2.

Each have their own benefits - priority tickets on O2, Orange Wednesdays on Orange etc.

The main points I was hoping someone could help me with is:

- I have read that Oranges 3G network is likely to be more reliable and quicker than O2's, as there is (currently) less demand on it.

- O2 have unlimited data but Orange have limited data to 750mb a month. Will this be enough?

I think I'm leaning towards Orange as Orange Wednesdays will be useful but I'm most worried about the data cap.

Heres a link to the tarriffs.

Let me know your thoughts!

Many thanks,

Tom

vodaphone is going to have Iphone shortly too...might be worth waiting to see what they offer.

For those that are looking at Orange, 10th of November is launch day

Pay Monthly – iPhone 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models will be available on multiple monthly plans, with the 3GS free on all £45 plans and the 3G model free from £30 plans (both with a 24-month contract). For those looking for full all-inclusive packages, a new high end “traveller” offer with inclusive roaming call and data allowance is available at £125 month. All plans include unlimited** anytime, anywhere UK mobile data usage on Orange’s data network, which has the largest 3G population coverage in the UK. In addition customers will also get free unlimited use of the UK’s largest single public Wi-Fi network, BT Openzone.

More info I came across regarding Orange iPhone deals
It seems that Orange, who are about to start selling the iPhone on the 10th of November are offering a so called unlimited data plane with the iPhone which is actually limited.

Rory Cellan Jones from the BBC has discovered something interesting in Orange’s iPhone terms and conditions, that data will be limited to 750MB per month, not only is data limited but some services aren’t included in the 750MB limit.

Orange's iPhone Unlimited Data Plan Is Limited to 750MB Per Month

Not to be used for other activities (eg using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video). Should such use be detected notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to all services which Orange does not believe constitutes mobile browsing.”

So basically you wont be able to use services like Spotify and Facebook messaging on your iPhone with Orange, which is pretty stupid, as those are the sort of services iPhone users want.

If Orange want iPhone customers, they need to re think their data usage policy, otherwise people will just stick with O2, personally I would have switched to Orange as I am less than happy with O2.

The only thing that lets the iPhone down, is the providers that carry it, lets hope that Vodafone comes out with a better deal when they start selling the iPhone next year.

When I looked into it I was of the impression that O2 would be more set up for it from an infrastructure point of view, I may have been wrong with this assumption, but it works for me.
and btw I have a orange sim I paid £5 for, I top up once in a blue moon and still do orange wednesday!

i can only use voda or o2, got feed up with o2 so tried voda and got a blackberry storm. wish i stayed with a IPHONE 3GS

Another thing to bear in mind, with o2 you get free use of BT Openzone and the Cloud wifi networks. Sounds like Orangedon't want many iPhone customers to me... I've had a 3G iPhone for a year on o2 and I've had no problems with either the phone or the carrier, so unless anything major goes wrong in the next 6 months I'll be renewing

O2. Orange are CRAP.

plus you get use of all the BT Openzone and Cloud wireless networks for free. worth it if you ask me !

i had a call from Vodafone telling me they had the 3GS and i could go with them when my 3G contract with O2 is up. i asked them what wireless networks they'd let me go on for free like O2 do, and they couldn't answer. "that's why i'll be sticking with O2" was my response... needless to say the call ended :P

From what I read. Twitter, Facebook, Spotify and Youtube will be banned under the Orange T&C's.

And all for a penny cheaper per month, and 'limited' data transfer. Yay Orange!

@TomHollo I am an iPhone user on O2, I use date a little at work etc to check things like twitter/facebook and some other bits and bobs and in 3 months from resetting usage on my phone i've only just gone over 600MB. at home I use wifi so no data goes through the network.

O2 had a fair usage of 200MB when the original iPhone came out but dropped this (still the case with other handsets and bolt-on)

You may also want to speak to 3's customer care team, they have been in the mobile mag's stating they are going to be taking the device during 2010 (T-Mobile have also stated the same, and offer some users a iPhone to stay with them already. I think this is for the big spenders though).

@Marcel where have you read that. I work in the mobile industry and have been prepping the iPhone on Orange for a UK retailer. Seems to all work on dev unit

BT openzone with Orange to. + better network coverage over the country (by a long way) however Orange customer care stink! saying that O2's iPhone team have gone crap just lately

Funny that on some PAYG packages, Facebook comes free !

Personally when my Orange contract runs out that will be it, the network coverage around here for phone calls is poor, in fact theres only a small area in my flat it works. I have an O2 PAYG chip that i tend to have to use rather alot, the Orange 3G network seems to cover the just about everywhere to an extent atleast i can send texts. But connection to the websurfing isnt that stable tbh, i often give up with it as after a couple of minutes you just get unable to connect.

Also would be odd if orange do not count facebook, etc in there useage.

Orange twitter feed has killed the rumors

@ConorfromOrange: …I can confirm that popular streaming services will not be banned for iPhone users.

i've got no reason to move away from O2, so i shall be staying with them when i upgrade :]

gotta be wrong, orange sold me a htc with an orange custom UI on it that had youtube player installed, they'd removed other stuff so I suspect that would have gone too.

Personally, I woudn't use either. Wait till vodafone gets it. As the emergency sevs use them, they have great coverage. though I admit they don't seem to have much of a choice of good phones at the moment....Anyelse noticed that or is it just me?

Thanks Everyone - more replies than i was expecting!

Thanks for that - really useful info re: useage.

I think that this is what i'll do - after 16 replies I'll wait and see  Seriously though, I think I'll see how Orange get on with it before I commit - 18 months is a long time if I then find out that I should have gone with someone else!

Thanks for all of your help everyone!

Tom

If you do get an iPhone, don't forget to check out this thread on all the apps that TP members recommend

actually, i'm tempted by the HTC Hero... especially with Android 2.0 coming shortly.

but you can only get it on Orange... lame :(

O2 for me when I get mine, don't really see Vodafone making much of a difference - seems Apple are imposing pretty much fixed prices across the carriers. I see no reason why Orange wouldn't have either made their deal better or the prices cheaper.

Interesting attempt at destroying Orange's chances.
Fantastic viral anti-marketing.

Indeed. Nothing like the power of gossip :D

It doesn't really matter what people recommend on a forum. It's all down to the quality of the data coverage in your area. OK, if one package offers a zillion free txts, and you actually use that many, then this may also sway your decision. But, first and foremost, it's down to coverage.

I recently had an odd conversation with a woman who wanted to switch to the cheapest payg package in the country (which we can help with) but she was put off by having to pay for txts for which she currently had (a few) free ones with the package she was on. After a rather silly and lengthy conversation we concluded that she only sent three txts a month at most. But it was FREE! and she wanted to keep it :bang:

Yes I agree its all down to the coverage in your area, though the fact that one network has better coverage is better overall.

Possibly, but straight from the T&C's of iPhone on Orange

Not to be used for other activities (e.g. using your handset as a modem, non-Orange internet based streaming services, voice or video over the internet, instant messaging, peer to peer file sharing, non-Orange internet based video)

i'm going t wait till after christmas, then hope pricing comes down a bit as they fight for the business. Up till 25th Dec there will be less pressure cos people just want a shiny toy.

i think....

You don't have to have an 18 month contract, they tried that with me when renewing last year.
All I saiid was I will renew for 12 months and the took it.....:)

O2 FTW!! I used to hate Orange as you would be on a call with full signal, then all of a sudden the call randomly drops. I used to laugh as they must know this is an issue as their small prints states that the call will be free if you call back after being cut off after 30 seconds of it happening.

Can't use instant messenging????

You can get MSN apps from the App store though !

yeah, by that time they're trying to call you back at the same moment, therefore you both end up going to each other's voicemail. then realise that the other person is probably trying to call back, so you hang up and wait for them to call... only to then realise that they're probably also doing that as well.

by that time 30 seconds has been and gone :P
